Soul Detective Case 5 Allen Orange

Roscoe Shelton I'm In Way Too Deep SS7
Red Kelly has begun another case on his Soul Detective blog - this time he is featuring Allen Orange.
Have a listen above to one of Allen Orange's songs for Roscoe Shelton who he worked with in Nashville in the mid-60s then drop over to Soul Detective to see how the case is coming along.

Toni Green @ Porretta 2007

My mate Nick Sands has kindly dropped me some photos of Toni Green who was the highlight of this year's Porretta Soul Festival. I can only agree that she was stunning having caught footage of her performing. I hope someone has the foresight to record one of her gigs because the lady is a real performer!

I thought I'd share one of my favourite cuts by her from the Good Time CD Strong Enough:

Eccentric Soul: Prix Label

Another CD which has seen plenty of recent action on my player is the latest in Numero Uno's Eccentric Soul series The Prix Label. Numero Uno is rapidly becoming one of my favourite reissue labels with these in-deph releases featuring small US labels.

Once again we have a high quality package from Rob Sevier and the guys featuring 19 tracks from the likes of Eddie Ray, Marion Black, The Royal Esquires etc.

I have featured one of my fave Prix label 45s which is a haunting side from Mitch Mitchell and Gene King.

Best Of Patti Drew CD

Patti Drew He's The One (I Love) Capitol
The above CD has been getting plenty of hammer at my place. A 24 track over view of Patti's Capitol years compiled by Tony Rounce and Bob Fisher.
Beautiful sophisticated music!!!! Let's hope we see her albums released back to back some time in the future.

Nicole Willis & Soul Investigators If This Ain't Love Video

MORE INFO

Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band New 45

Don't forget to check out this new 45 from Charles:

"The World (Is Going Up In Flames)" B/W "Heartaches and Pain" on Dunham Records

Described by the boys themselves:

From the heart and soul of Tommy "TNT" Brenneck, guitarist for Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings & The Budos Band, comes a sound at once mysterious and empowering. It is almost inconceivable that recordings this lush and brutally lovely in it's nakedness could come out of the smallish privacy of a musician's bedroom in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Eli "Paperboy" Reed & Trueloves @ Zu Zu Cambridge MA 2/8/07

Eli has beeen in touch to tell about a gig at Zu Zu this week:

As some of you might already know, August is the last month that ZuZu will be having live music, opting to go the dj-only route. When The True Loves first formed we did a month-long residency at ZuZu and it really helped to get the band going so we are very, very excited to come back to ZuZu for one night of insanity before the whole thing is over!

The show is this Thursday, August 2nd and we'll be playing 2 sets and will be joined by many special guests including former members of the band Emeen Z., Noah Furvis and more!

We will also have our 7'' single available for sale for the first time (you might call it a release show.) Best of all the show is totally FREE!

So you have no reason not to come out and get drunk and dance. Thursday, August 2nd

Young Birds Fly Premiere Feedback

Leonardo Flores has been in touch to tell me about the premiere of his film Young Birds Fly:

Wow,

Thanks to the 200 people who came out to the first showing of Young Birds Fly on Saturday.

It was a fantastic screening and good times were had by all.It was a very party like and good vibes atmosphere in the theatre throughout the entire 3 hour performance of YBF...perhaps it was all the alcohol that smuggled into the theatre and after a few hours a few people were a bit drunk! Everyone seemed to get a kick out if the story and characters. Although many people did have their opinions on YBF generally speaking it was well received and I thank you for coming out and watching my film. I plan to cut down the film now meaning that the long print I screened on Saturday will not be screened again.

I had only wish that I could have talked to many of you that came out, but it all went by too fast and by the time I cleared out the theatre and packed my equipment everyone was gone! I would love to hear your opinion of the film so feel free to email me.Thanks to both the Long Beach Vintage Classic Scooter Club and Ricky and his Covina crew to bringing out all the Vintage scooters to the event. Also a special nod to all those who came out from Arizona and San Diego for the screening. Also thanks to John Garside and Julian for manning the projection booth and Riannon Beltran for heading the ticket booth. The above made the afternoon a day many people will never forget!

Cheers

Leonardo Flores

Hope to be able to do a full review soon!!!!

Diplomettes New Tracks

I mentioned The Diplomettes a few posts back.

Who are the ladies? "Three gifted soul sirens!" says the Kansas City Star. The Diplomettes - Abbie, Kathy and Sarah - are the female counterparts to The Diplomats of Solid Sound, bringing some vocal action to their instrumental soul. For more info on shows, band bio, or booking, check out myspace.com/thediplomatsofsolidsound.

Abbie, Kathy and Sarah have sent me a bulletin to say that they have 3 smoking hot tracks available on their MySpace ~LIGHTS OUT, HURT ME SO and ALREADY GONE. Go check them out!

Good To Be Back!

I had to take a few weeks off from the blog to get some work done around the house so it is good to be back!

To get started again, I have chosen 2 sides which continue the A to Z of my collection.

Roy Malone I've Got Something For The Ladies GCS

There seemed to be a time in the early 80's when the issue of small label 45s would never dry up! Memphis provided many memorable sides during this period by Dan Douglas, Earl Randle, Veg, King Saul, Johhny Dean amongst others. I have no background information on Roy Malone except that he had another good 45 on Big M You're The Sweetest Thig I Ever Had from 1985.

Sam Nesbit Keep On Hustling Right On!

Dave Godin was one of the best known commentators on the UK soul scene with his early involvement in the Motown Appreciation Society, the Soul City shop and label and especially in the 70's with his fortnightly column in Blues & Soul. It was during that second spell with Blues & Soul that he set up the Right On! label issuing sides by the likes of Sandra Phillips, Jelly Beans, Crow, Fantastic Puzzles and Sam Nesbit who is featured here.

Dee Edwards Why Can't There Be Love

I recently found out that Dee Edward's Why Can't There Be Love will be appearing on the second Gilles Peterson Digs America collection for Ubiquity.

I found this beautiful German Vogue copy while digging around trying to find out more on the Bump Shop 45. I had never seen a Vogue issue before and was very pleased that not only was there a photo of Dee Edwards on the sleeve but the German pressing is better sound quality and has a different B-side to the US issue.
