Lenis Guess Video On Dig Deeper MySpace
I missed advertising the above show but I picked up this message:
Hard to believe we've been doing Dig Deeper for a whole year now. What a fantastic way to celebrate our anniversary last night with Lenis Guess's first NYC show in over 20 years - this time backed by the Solid Set - and the first time he had ever performed some of his classic 45s live before - things like "For all you've been" and "Why, why, why'd she leave me?" (if you don't know that one, definitely pick up a copy - does not seem to be well known, and it's a killer).
We just uploaded 4 live recordings from the show last night - "Why, why, why'd she leave me?", "Working for my baby", "Just ask me", and "For all you've been". Thanks to everyone who joined us for yet another once in a lifetime show:
http://www.myspace.com/digdeepernyc
We'll be posting the setlists from Lenis's live set, and our DJ setlists on the blog on our myspace page over the days to come (the Scorpio Brothers played fantastic stuff), and hopefully will have photos from the night up shortly as well.
Hope to see some of you at our big 2 night end of summer blowout on August 28 and 29 - details are on our myspace page, and on another thread on this site as well.
- honky
Not just a great great show - Lenis sure knows how to work a band, they were awesome - but special mention has to be made for Best Entrance Ever: do the intro, band kicks into the vamp, and Lenis emerges in a knockout tricked-out Andres Williams-style suit including full wraparound red shades, takes the stage and with a completely expressionless face slowly eats a ripe peach for a whole 2 minutes, audience just stares open-mouthed at his beyond coolness until he leans into the mic and announces: "Mighty hard to find a good peach in New York City". Genius
Breakin Bread @ Jazz Cafe London 17 July
Our next session at the Jazz Café will be on Friday 17th July with a b boy showcase and live funk/soul/psych from The Killer Meters!
The music policy is an open minded exploration into funk and hip hop taking in soul, latin, beats, cut and paste new and old school, in fact anything that makes you strut your funky stuff. All elements are represented with DJ's, Live Bands, Breakdancers (B-boys), MC's and Dope visuals.
Live music this month is provided by Breakin Bread's house band The Killer Meters. The Killer Meters first emerged in 2005 with a stunning album of Meters covers and since then they've taken on the fantabulous Karime Kendra as a full time vocalist.
This lady is a true phenomenon. Her amazing voice and electric stage presence is a family tradition. Her mother is the Northern Soul legend, Ty Karim, but Miss Kendra has more than earned her own formidable reputation. She's now rightfully regarded as one of the UK's best yet still relatively unknown soul mistresses. They'll be playing breaks for the b-boys as well as their own set.
Breakin Bread has always been an important part of the UK breakdancing scene. It's the only club that has a host of b-boys coming down every month. Other nights do it but these are events for b-boys rather than a general music club. Breakin Bread support the scene by hosting battles and showcases on alternative months and this month its' a showcase from the Junior Sinstars. The Sinstars are one of the UK's longest standing crews.
DJ Skeg is Breakin Breads founder and resident DJ. He'll be spinning, cutting and blending tunes and atmosphere to hype the crowd and get you on the floor.
Your host this month is MC Dylan Sage So if you're looking for a good time and you fancy hitting the dancefloor Breakin Bread is the one! Funky Good Times!!

Sahib Shihab Summer Dawn
A fantastic early record by Sahib Shihab -- a motherlode of modal jazz grooves, cut during the early days of the Clarke-Boland Big Band! The record features a core group of players from that ensemble -- including Shihab on alto, baritone, and flute, plus Francy Boland on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass, Ake Persson on trombone, Francy Boland on piano, Joe Harris on bongos, and Kenny Clarke on drums -- all coming together here with a groove that's really groundbreaking -- a style that's sweet and soulful, but rhythmically revolutionary too! The tracks are all long and grooving -- with the kind of dancing jazz tone that you'd expect from the Saba/MPS label during the mid 60s -- a big change from the Argo label that originally issued the record. But that's no surprise, either, as the session was actually recorded in Europe by Gigi Campi -- the man behind the CBBB albums on MPS -- with a feel that's quite similar to other Shihab classics, like Companionship or Seeds. The whole thing's great -- one of Shihab's most wonderful records, and totally worth owning -- and titles include "Lillemor", "Please Don't Leave Me", "Waltz For Seth", and "Herr Fixit". © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.

Skullsnaps New Release
New Day
Electric stores, Itunes, Amazon ,napster, shockhound,Lala and Amie.
Titled (DOT COM LUV) and( Ain't NO LOVE.)
The greatest funk band you think you've never heard. However, if you're a fan of hip-hip than you've likely heard us sampled in more than a few songs. You may not know the Skull Snaps name, yet, but I'm sure you know the opening drum break on "It's a New Day." It's one of the most sampled drum breaks of all time. Many of the greatest hip-hop beats feature samples of Skull Snaps music.
Our self-titled album is one of the most sought after rare groove records on the market. It fetches 300+ by collectors and DJ's. We recently re-mastered and released it officially for the first time on cd. If you don't see it in your local music store you can order it from the label here - http://www.aztecmusic.net/ There will also be a new release coming this spring of old and new material. Also check back here often to check for live dates. We will be playing around NY in the near future. This is what the folks at aztec have to say about us and the album: ---Skull Snaps is a legendary funk album that has long been shrouded in obscurity. The band recorded their self-titled debut and a handful of singles in 1973, and then vanished without a trace.
In recent years, their vinyl has become ubiquitously sampled and highly collectible. The monstrous break that opens up their classic cut, Its A New Day, furnished the beat for countless hip-hop hits of the mid-90s (along with James Browns Funky Drummer and Sly & the Family Stones Sing A Simple Song, Its A New Day contains the most sampled break in music history). More than just a treasure trove for the Hip Hop community, though, Skull Snaps stands as a classic in pure funk and soul. The band's irresistible sound embraces the black vocal group sound of early 70s Temptations, Chi-Lites, and Dramatics, cut with an unmistakable originality. Every song is blessed with a gospel-soaked call and response dynamic that contrasts gritty lead vocals with the bands perfect harmonies.
Heavily bootlegged, Aztec Musics reissue of Skull Snaps is the first release that has been officially sanctioned by the band. This deluxe version has been digitally remastered, with extensive liner notes containing new interviews and rare photos, and contains 2 bonus tracks packaged in a 6 panel digi-pak.--- Anyways, besides just re-releasing that classic jawn we are back performing and getting our new album together. It will feature songs that were written and recorded back in the 70's that were never released as well as more recent ones. We are currently putting the finishing touches on it and trying to find a label to release it. We will also be performing soon in NYC.
Check their MySpace for details.

Have you ever noticed that when times seem toughest, music seems to get better? I am a song born in Trenton, New Jersey and given the name Ellis E. Phelps aka (E Boogie). King Records of Cincinnati
Starting with a few songs and a dream in 1943, King Records—a leading American independent—launched musical careers from a shabby brick factory on Brewster Avenue in Cincinnati’s Evanston neighborhood. Founder Sydney Nathan recorded country singers Cowboy Copas, Hawkshaw Hawkins, Wayne Raney, and others and later added black acts such as James Brown and the Famous Flames, Bull Moose Jackson, Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, Lonnie Johnson, and Freddy King. Meanwhile, King also explored polka, jazz, bluegrass, comedy, gospel, pop, and instrumental music—anything that Nathan could sell. Although King’s Cincinnati factory closed in 1971, the company’s diverse catalog of roots music had already become a phenomenon. Its legacy lives on in hundreds of classic recordings that are prized by collectors and musicians.

There's That Beat 11
The latest issue (#11) of There's That Beat! has hit the street. This particular issue is absolutely rammed with scans and pics, stories and the stuff people have come to expect from us. There are more full color record scans in this issue than ever before! With extensive features on Esther Phillips, Little Anthony and The Imperials and a great look at the Australian labeled Rare Soul we compliment the stories this time with a truly international flavour from the "Diary of A Travelling Soulie" as we encompass gigs in the US, UK and Spain.
You can check it out by clicking HERE
There are also a few back issues of some issues so if you need to complete I'd grab them now. Issues 1-4 are now completely sold out. The remaining issues are also steadily disappearing.
We also have a great binder now that will keep the issues pristine, you can check these out at: TTB! BINDERS
If anyone needs to check their subscription Bev will be only too happy to oblige at info@theresthatbeat.com
As usual a big thanks to all the contributors and subscribers for all the support.

Numero Uno's Light On The South Side
Between 1975-1977 Chicago's South Side night clubs were a little lighter. Not just because of a lanky white guy skulking about, but rather because of the camera and strobe light he carried. Michael Abramson hit Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, The Patio Lounge, and The Showcase Lounge, not to capture the artists on stage, instead popping off a half dozen rolls every night on the crowd. Light: On The South Side gathers for the first time over 100 of these images, as Numero shines its own strobe on yet another dark corner of the past. The 132-page hard back book features photos, an ephemera section, and an essay by Nick Hornby. Housed in a gorgeous slipcase with the 12X12 book is Pepper's Jukebox, a seventeen track compilation of the kind of funky Chicago blues heard from the stage and the Wurlitizer. The deluxe 2LP set is packaged in a sharp gatefold jacket with two inner sleeves crammed to the gills with label scans and stories. All in all, it's the classiest Numero record , spotted easily from across the room with it's near 2" spine.
But just when you thought we couldn't make it any more mouthwatering, we went ahead and upped the ante. The first 250 copies ordered from our website will come with a signed and hand-numbered print from the photographer Michael Abramson, plus a limited edition bonus 45. The 45 will only be Between 1975-1977 Chicago's South Side night clubs were a little lighter. All in all, it's the classiest Numero record ever made, spotted easily from across the room with it's near 2" spine.
But just when you thought we couldn't make it any more mouthwatering, we went ahead and upped the ante. The first 250 copies ordered from our website will come with a signed and hand-numbered print from the photographer Michael Abramson, plus a limited edition bonus 45. The 45 will only be available for the first 1000 orders, after that it disappears permanently.
While the soundtrack to Light: On The South Side will only be available on vinyl, the first 250 copies sold will come with an immediate link to download the album as 320kbps MP3s. And, while the book won't be issued to the public until November, we're sending out all pre-orders in September.
