Gene Anderson The Hi-Rhythm Sessions

Soul-Tay-Us have released a real scorcher out of the vaults of Hi Records. Let's hope we see more emerging!

Rare Memphis funk from Gene Anderson -- an already-obscure singer who recorded a handful of singles for Westbound and Hi Records -- represented here by a batch of previously unissued material! Backings here are by the Hi Rhythm section and The Memphis Horns, but the tracks themselves have a bit more of an edge than regular Hi material -- a lot more emphasis on funk at the bottom than soul on the top, with Gene's vocals nicely shouting, calling, and vamping along with the grooves on all tunes! A few cuts feature backing vocals from Chalmers & Rhodes, and the album features both instrumental and vocal versions of 5 different songs -- split into a side apiece for the record! Titles include "Funky Soul Music", "Freaky Touch", "I Want It", "It's You Baby", and "Joy". Dusty Groove

Gene Anderson is still active and I will be returning to the man in a later post.
