Sugar Beats Search For Peace

Sugar Beats have a new album which is worth checking out - drop over to their MySpace to get a preview.

Here's a blurb on the band:

The band came about through a desire to make good quality music using real musicians whilst, at the same time, moving jazz forwards. After putting on a series of club nights at Birmingham's Medicine Bar, which consisted of a set by a live "jazz" band with DJs playing Sun Ra and Roy Ayers alongside Madlib and Bugz in the Attic, Chris and Leo put a band together to combine these diverse influences into a single live unit. 2 years of refining and gigging later, and the first album is out now.

Highlghts include gigs in Edinburgh, London, Oxford and Birmingham playing alongside the likes of Dom Servini, Phil Asher and Dego (4 Hero). More Recently they have supported Norman Jay (at the Cheltenham Jazz festival), Gilles Peterson and Bugz in the Attic.

C.P. Love

C.P. Love has long been one of my favourite Louisiana singers and I was fortunate enough to catch him singing at the New Orleans Jazz Fest a few years back.

He has a new CD out soon called Homeland. Here is a brief bio on the man:

Born in Louisiana just outside of New Orleans' colorful French Quarter, CP Love grew up surrounded by a heritage of Blues and Jazz. CP was raised listening to the greats, many of who also started their music careers on the Mississippi, down in New Orleans. Sam Cooke, Elmo James, and Johnny Taylor all became the foundation of Blues that inspired CP to create his own style.

Filled with soul and high energy, CP delivers his music with a tremendous amount of feeling through a clear soulful voice that was made for Blues. The only son of Roy and Corine Love, CP took to music as a teenager. Local bands solicited CP's guitar playing and he found himself with professional gigs as early as age 15. Being too young to legally enter, let alone play in a club, on occasion when police would stop in during one of their gigs, CP would quickly disappear and wait out back till authotities left. CP began opening for top acts in the early 70's for entertainers such as BB King and Fats Domino.

He has also performed on prominent stages across the country as a headliner himself. CP has performed at many Blues and Jazz Festivals, including New Orleans' famous Jazz Fest as well as appearances from California to New York and to Canada at the Montreal Blues Featival, with over 250,000 people in attendance. CP has been compared to greats such as Sam Cooke and Otis Redding.

However, it's his originals, Stubborn Girl", "True Blue" and "Secondline Home" that are real gems. CP's music style range from Blues and Soul to R&B and Raggae, and his song list is extensive including standards and originals. While CP"s recordings are awesome, nothing can compare to seeing him perform live! CP's Southern Soul style is upbeat and unforgetable.

In addition to working with his band, CP founded Trip City Jingles, and is president of Pierre' Publishing. CP is currently working on several projects, writing, arranging, and recording. Putting his career on hold after Hurricane Katrina, his new CD "My Homeland" is now complete and ready for release.

Nathaniel Mayer New CD Release Party 5/10/07

The record release party for Nathaniel Mayer's new album "Why Don't You Give It To Me?,"is scheduled for Friday October 5th at the the Magic Bag Theatre in Ferndale, MI.

Also on the bill are SSM and The Meltdowns.

"Why Don't You Give It To Me" is out now on CD and color vinyl (ltd. edition) on Alive Naturalsound records.

"His now thin, raspy voice may not be what older fans recall, but the raw Detroit soulrecorded here should still take them back to the days when the town's soul was so heavythat it influenced the burgeoning garage rock scene as much as it did the slicker Motown sound."- Rock & Roll and Meandering Nonsense

"You can almost smell the cigarette smoke, cheap scotch, cologne and sweat emanating from Mayer'spowder-blue polyester suit. C'mon, give the man some love." - Pop Matters

Three Tenors Of Soul

I've had some information in from Bobby Eli on his new project "Three Tenors Of Soul".

On September 25, 2007, The Philadelphia Sound is reborn on a highly anticipated and historic new recording featuring the lead vocalists from three iconic groups of Philly’s golden era: The Stylistics’ Russell Thompkins Jr., The Delfonics’ William ‘Poogie’ Hart and Blue Magic’s Ted Mills. The Three Tenors- All the Way From Philadelphia will mark the first time that these dynamic vocalists have ever been captured on record with one another.

Three Tenors of Soul – All The Way From Philadelphia is the completion of a dream for producer Bobby Eli. “For a long time I have wanted to put together a sort of super group featuring three falsetto voices that were well known during the 70s,” says Eli. “The top three groups that epitomize the sweet soul sound of Philadelphia are the Delfonics, Stylistics and Blue Magic. Each of the guys - William, Russell and Ted - have their own distinct sound. Although all are natural tenors, they each bring to the plate their own identity. The trick was getting songs that would work with all three and I think I have nailed it!”

All The Way From Philadelphia showcases a refreshing mix of newly energized R&B classics as well as one Hall & Oates original, the title track, which has never been recorded. The tracks on the CD feature all three tenors either as a group or one as the lead while the others harmonize background vocals. Russell Thompkins Jr.’s smooth and refined tenor takes the lead on such stellar versions of Barry Gibb’s “Too Much Heaven,” The Average White Band’s “A Love of Your Own” and Yvette Davis’ “How Could I Let You Get Away,” a song that Russell Thompkins Jr. has long wanted to record and that was originally recorded by the Spinners. Ted Mills’ sensual and soulful vocals are showcased on Maurice White’s classic “Fantasy,” from Earth, Wind & Fire’s triple platinum selling All 'N All LP, as well as on “Grateful” an original by producer Bobby Eli co-written with Vinnie Barrett. All three tenors shine on such classics as Hall & Oates’ 1 1981 hit “I Can’t Go for That” which also features Hall & Oates as does the title track. The three tenors also coalesce on the Gamble & Huff gem “Where Are All My Friends” which was a hit for Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and the Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager’s “That’s What Friends Are For,” originally sung by Rod Stewart for the soundtrack of Ron Howard’s film Night Shift but which is far better known by Dionne Warwick’s cover with Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder.

Exhibition: American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music

October 13, 2007 - September 7, 2008 American Sabor: Latinos in U.S. Popular Music

This exhibition is the first interpretive museum exhibition to tell the story of the profound influence and impact of Latinos in American popular music. Rich with artifacts, instrument interactives, listening kiosks, and films, American Sabor opens at EMPSFM October 13, 2007.

The 5,000-square-foot exhibition focuses on five major centers of Latino popular music production in the post-World War II United States—New York City, Los Angeles, Miami, San Antonio and San Francisco—which represent the diversity of Latino music. Each city section draws visitors into the broader histories and cultures that shaped these musicians’ contributions through artifacts, hands-on instrument interactives designed to teach key concepts, highly produced listening kiosks that allow critical listening and learning, three films created for the exhibit and interpretive text presented in English and Spanish.

Latino contributions to popular music in the United States have too often been relegated to the margins and footnotes of a narrative dominated by the interaction of African and European Americans—an overly black and white view of our musical history. American Sabor (sabor is the Spanish word for taste or flavor, commonly used to describe good music) is a museum exhibit that turns that phrase and that perspective on its head, documenting the roles of post-World War II U.S. Latino musicians as interpreters and disseminators of Latin American genres, but also highlighting their roles as innovators within genres of music that we understand to be indigenous to the United States, such as jazz, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll and hip-hop.

Hammond Beat Records

Following on from the last post - let's stick with Hammond Beat and over to the masters of the genre Hammond Beat Records.

Hammond Beat's first CD for the label came from Italy's The Link Quartet followed by 2 more CDs in 2004 featuring a 2nd album from The Link Quartet and a soundtrack for the independent film "Wilson Chance".

In late 2005, Hammondbeat started it's next phase with a much expanded roster. The Dansettes (NYC) and The Fil Lorenz Soul-tet (San Francisco) got their recording debuts in November, followed by label debuts (May '06) of spy-surfers The Special Agents (UK), dancefloor monsters Screamin' Retro (UK), the greatest funky jam band around The Yards (USA), and the masters of bass heavy soundscapes Baron Samedi E.S.Q. (Canada).

Over the next year our catalog will double in size with follow-ups from all of the above along with label debuts by Stoned Soul Picnic, Nick Rossi Set, Men From S.P.E.C.T.R.E., Phat Fred, Groove-o-matic Deluxe, and many, many more!

Hammondbeat also features a forum where we post record reviews, and fans can intereact with each other and the artists within the community and on the label.

All of our records are available from most MP3 resellers (iTunes, eMusic, etc), online shops (CDBaby, Amazon, Dusty Groove, etc.), via special order at your local record stores (we are distributed by Burnside Distribution), and of course directly from our website

www.hammondbeat.com

Nick Rossi Set

The Nick Rossi Set are one of the grooviest of the Hammond beat bands.

Celebrating nearly a decade plying their groove trade, the NICK ROSSI SET are internationally know as San Francisco's premiere Hammond organ combo. With a discography that includes releases on such hip labels as Acid Jazz, Blow It Hard, and Record Kicks; the group continues to find fans world-wide. Their sound digs deep into the classic soul jazz bags of Blue Note & Prestige Records from the first great era of right-on sounds. Their debut disc, ON THE OUTSET, is available in stereo on CD from Hammondbeat Records, in hi-fi mono on LP from Flare Records, and as a download from iTunes.

Drop over to their MySpace and taken a listen to tracks from the On The Outset.

Jump The Gun Brighton

I recently spent a few days in Brighton where I used to live back in the early 70's. One shop of interest I came across was Jump The Gun in Gardiner Street. The shop has been described in the Yahoo Travel Guide as follows:

Selling very chic and authentic mod wear, this shop plays on the image created of Brighton in the film Quadrophenia. The window display holds such memorabilia as a Vespa moped and a British flag. Although on the expensive side you could find yourself shopping alongside stars such as Paul Weller. They stock the inevitable Ben Sherman shirts and parkas, but also have their own range of interesting shirts. Great for classic suits with a twist, this is the perfect place for informal men who attend formal events.

After passing Jump The Gun, I continued my walk around the North Street area of Brighton. While I was walking down from the station I passed Church Street and noticed a familiar sight. I couldn't believe my eyes to see that a sign advertising a secondhand clothes shop was still hanging above the door though the shop was long closed.

Back in the early 70's, I purchased several sets of clothes from the shop including a gorgeous grey Italian design suit which looked so cool - I was so pleased because I was too young to have been able to buy this perfect mod attire in the 60's - I cannot recall what I did with it!!!!

Linda Jones Gee

Courtesy of Johnny Spencer

I picked a bulletin up from Terry Jones, the daughter of the late, great soulstress Linda Jones:
Hey,
Just reaching out to let you know today we made available the single Gee on MySpace .
Everyone was asking for it so I put it out there on www.cdfreedom.com/lindajones
Or you can visit my Mom's Myspace page and click there to get it.
I'm currently working on the unreleased material and trying to have it ready for the holidays. "GEE" will not be on the CD it will only be available as a download.
I wish my Mom was here to see how many fans she still has!
Take Care and Talk Soon,
Terry Jones
Here is what Terry has to say about he mother:

My Mom Linda Jones left this earth way to soon. Most of the information written about my mother is incorrect so lets start with her birth date. Linda was born in Newark, New Jersey December 14, 1944 not in January as previously reported and she did not collapse backstage at the Apollo during her week engagement, rushed to the hospital slipped into a coma and passed away. She did fall ill at the Apollo but my Mom came home, laid down after her first show, my grandmother went into her room to wake her so she could get ready for her next performance but my Mom would not wake up. She went into a sugar coma. My grandmother called the ambulance and they rushed my Mom to the hospital and on March 14, 1972 she passed away. My Mom should have canceled her performance that day but not my Mom.
Let's talk about the pleasant things about my Mom. She would go in the studio never hearing a song and once taught the melody would sing the song down in one take, while reading off of the paper. Richard Poindexter who co-wrote "Hypnotized will tell you she recorded in one take! She was what they call a singers singer. She suffered with diabetes and other heath problems but that never stopped her from doing her music to the fullest. My Mom didn't have the best people around her handling her business but not many artist of her time did.
One day I will tell the complete story but for now I ask you to enjoy her music old and get ready for the new to be released on my label in 2008. I would like to say thank you to all of my Mom's fans around the world old and new for keeping her memory and music alive!!
Sincerely, Terry Jones Daughter Of Linda Jones
By the way, if you want to see more of Johnny Spencer's artworks then drop by his site.

The show is currently broadcast every Saturday night between 6 and 9 and is also available at any time through the listen again facility on the BBC 6Music website. I have also recently encouraged unsigned bands to get in touch and send in their demos to get played on the show and have had a great response with some seriously good music being sent to me from all over the globe

Ubiquity Records New Releases

Got a mail shot this week from Ubiquity Records with 3 cracking CDs:

"For a long time, all that most people knew about the late Eugene Blacknell was this retarded open break in the intro to his “Gettin’ Down” single. Thanks to Ubiquity, however, it’s time for the Oakland guitar master to be known to the world. I can’t say enough about Blacknell and his work ... 'We Can’t Take Life For Granted' is Blacknell’s painfully overdue official debut. And remember, I don’t like anything. But this album hit me like a Joe Louis left hook..."

'We Can't Take Life for Granted' compiles the bulk of Blacknell's output, from the hard-shuffling instrumental blues of "Jump Back" to the wildly syncopated, lyrically optimistic funk number "I'm So Thankful," all of it fueled by his staccato, rhythmically propulsive guitar attack."- San Francisco ChronicleOakland guitar ace Eugene Blacknell released multiple singles that ranged in style from raw r'n'b to power house funk. His musical career stretched from the early 1960s to the end of the 1980s and during that time he established himself as an East Bay original, an entrepreneur, an activist, and a family man. With so many accomplishments it’s an irony of fate that he died before releasing an album despite having recorded enough material for several. This is the official Eugene Blacknell debut album, and the story of a Bay Area legend.
Three bonus tracks will be available via from Ubiquity's digital partners
Featuring yet more one off’s and exclusives, this latest installment picks up from where the last one left off - in stunning form. Pitching the BPMs right down, 4Lux man Miles Benjamin kicks things off in style with a bubbling, bass heavy piece of slo-mo hip hop. Taking it right back up Ohmega Watts, delivers a direct dancefloor hit with the rowdy Afro-funk of ‘Platypus Strut’.
There’s even a Hudson Mohawke remix of Radio City’s ‘The Hop’ to contend with too. Brilliant. 4/5"- DJ Mag"Crazy future music from the one they call Hudson Mohawke...the world is coming round to this beat...nuts!"- Benji B (BBC - 1XTRA, Deviation)
The second Choices EP includes hard hitting bubbling electric soul from Milez Benjiman, a super DJ friendly extended raucus Afrobeat jam from Ohmega Watts (a version not on the upcoming album), and a mad remix of the Radio Citizen favorite "The Hop" by Hudson Mohawke.
A Hudson Mohawke Instrumental Mix will also be available as a digital bonus.

"The Roy Ayers produced group see the light of day again as two previously undiscovered gems rise to the surface. Punchy soul jazz at its best, as you would expect from the Ubiquity camp."- DJ Magazine"Top 10 /// August 2007"- Spine Magazine
We've got two previously unreleased tracks by legendary 1970s soul act RAMP! Both produced by vibes-master Roy Ayers post-release of their 1977 classic Come Into Knowledge album. These are not new recordings, these are vintage RAMP, previously unheard but recently rescued from a demo the band recorded on cassette. Newly mastered, eq'd and now ready to rumble on loud n'proud 12" vinyl."The Old One, Two" is a cover of a Roy Ayers track (written by Ayers, William Allen and Edwin Birdsong and originally released on the Roy Ayers album A Tear To A Smile). Powered by a nasty bass line, the tune transcends music eras sounding just as contemporary as it did in 1977 and is destined to be a DJ favorite. On the flipside is the boogie tune "Paint Me Any Color," also written and produced by Roy Ayers but never recorded by anyone else. These Roy Ayers productions foreshadowed his classic releases to come on the Uno Melodic label from acts like The Eighties Ladies and Ethel Beatty.

Bobby Byrd RIP

I awoke to further sad news that Bobby Byrd had died. More news when I get it.

Willie Tee RIP

Yesterday, I received the sad news that Willie Tee had died.

Saturday September 11, 2007 3:35PM

By Keith SperaMusic writer

Keyboardist, songwriter and producer Wilson "Willie Tee" Turbinton, an early architect of New Orleans funk and soul, died today of colon cancer. He was 63.

Mr. Turbinton secured his place in New Orleans music legend by producing and co-writing the Wild Magnolias' self-titled 1973 debut. That landmarkrecording and the subsequent "They Call Us Wild," also produced by Mr.Turbinton, largely introduced the Mardi Gras Indians' distinctive street beatsand chantsto the world."

In a city of treasures, he was rich in taste and tradition," said record producer and longtime friend Leo Sacks. "The depth, breadth, scope andcommandof his piano playing were profound.

He helped shape the sound of New Orleans for more than four decades."Mr. Turbinton's passing follows that of his older brother, modern jazz saxophonist Earl Turbinton, on Aug. 3.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Martin Turbinton; a sister, Joyce Turbinton Gill; a daughter, Racquel Turbinton Bruno; and two grandchildren.

A funeral is scheduled for Sept. 22 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m., with a service to follow.

I will be back asap with a musical tribute to Willie Tee

Don’t Panic & JOB present Don’t Party at The Contact with Finley Quaye + guests Friday September 21st 2007, Doors 17:00 – 03:00 For just under a decade now, the Don't Panic name has been synonymous with youth culture and underground music. Having worked on campaigns for artists and events including Roots Manuva, Massive Attack, Manchester International Festival, and Sonar, Don't Panic has pooled its expertise to create the multimedia showcase that is Don't Party.

By day, the event will be a relaxed affair showcasing the most soulful and atmospheric musical performances including live jazz, soul, folk, and reggae.

By night, the infamous fortress styled building is transformed into a bustling party, journeying from hip hop to funk, breakbeat to dubstep, and glitch to drum ‘n’ bass. Headlining the event will be Finley Quaye; former winner of the Best Artist title at The Brit Awards, and unquestionably one of the most prolific songwriters and performers of the last decade. The triple platinum artist has worked with the likes of William Orbit, A Guy Called Gerald, and Beth Orton, and will be performing classic tracks from his vast back-catalogue and new album 'Pound for Pound’.

Notable musical support on the night comes from Peter Parker of Fingathing, and Manchester’s very own ‘Whatever the Weather’ DJs. Visual entertainment on the night comes from several sources. Fusing dance, martial arts, and gymnastics, The Corbão de Ouro Capoeira Collective will be performing in the lower foyer space, whilst the upper foyer will hold an exhibition of twenty of the most iconic Don’t Panic posters from the past decade, including pieces from pseudo-anonymous graffiti pioneer Banksy, Radiohead’s visual conceptualist Stanley Donwood, and psychedelic comic artist Jeremyville.

The upper foyer will also be home to a large screen upon which a live feed from our camera team will be projected as part of a reactive visuals display.

And finally, live footage from the night will be available for viewing on various video networking sites, our website - www.dontpaniconline.com, and may also feature on Channel M.

Tickets are priced at £14 advance, and are available from The Contact Box Office, Ticketline, Sofa Bar, Piccadilly Records, Fat City Records, Eastern Bloc Records, and Vox Pop Records

Function Club Malmoe 22/9/07

Picked up an update from Sebastian Fonzeus on the Function Club:

During the past 6 months my friends Helena, Jonte and Joppe have been running a great soul club called FUNCTION here in our hometown of Malmoe, Sweden. They've organised a series of club nights as well as a two-day weekender and have had some TOP DJs guesting like Butch, Honky, Tommy Sovik, James Trouble, Dean Anderson, Christian Brodsjoe, Johan Tollgerdt, Lin & Jamie Taylor, Micke Balkefors, Christian Hermansson, Gustav & Johannes etc.). I'll be joining them as a resident DJ in September so I thought that it would be a good time for me to do a post about it here.

FUNCTION is held at a two-room venue in the centre of Malmoe, it's one smaller room and then a big "main room" and the entire place has got a capacity of about 400-500 people. In the main room we mostly play 60's-70's northern, crossover, modern and funk. In the smaller room, the music is more leaned towards 70's and onwards modern soul and disco. We've got some very nice "main room" guest DJ's lined up for the autumn/winter and here is the info:

September 22nd - Ian Wright
October 20th - Heikki H (Helsinki)
November 17th - Richard "DJ Honky" Lewis (NYC)
December 15th - residents galore

We haven't decided upon guest dj's in the smaller room yet, but there will be at least one guest dj in there per night throughout the autumn too.

Our website can be found at:

There are cheap flights by Ryanair to Malmoe airport. Copenhagen airport is just as close, trains to Malmoe from there take 30 minutes.

Hotel bookings can be made here: http://www.malmo.se/hotel (in English).

If you're planning to visit any of our nights, be there early as it's usually very busy and fills up quickly.

Groovin' At The Go Go

In my recent post on Tittyshakers , I mentioned the link between Go Go dancing and soul music.

According to Wikipedia, Go Go Dancing originated as follows:

Go-Go dancers were originally 1960s-era miniskirted clubgoers, dancing at clubs such as the Whisky a Go Go (one of the first to have dancers in elevated cages), wearing go-go boots.

The etymology of Go-Go may be the noun go, one of whose meanings is "power of going, energy, vigor". Or it may come from the names of the nightclubs, which ultimately come from the French à gogo, meaning "in abundance, galore".

Go Go dancers featured in clubs where soul music was played but the word Go Go also pervaded many songs which attempted to cash in on the craze. This linkage between dance styles is common in soul music from the Twist up to the Funky Chicken and there are 100's of songs referring to dances such as The Skate, The Boogaloo, The Monkey etc.

Below I have delved into my archives and linked up some pictures with songs which refer to the Go Go phenomena.

100% Collector's Choice Fund-raiser CD

Kansas City Melody-aires "Don't Let It Be Too Late" (Simco)
Mildred Clark, recently deceased on April 23, 2007 in Kansas City, KS, was the lead vocalist on this raw gospel screamer. This unique gospel-soul track starts with a soul jazz flute. Mildred Clark, as well as being a middle school science teacher in Missouri, recorded music up to 1990 on the ABC Peacock label.

George Allen "Come On Back" (Sotoplay)
George Allen, originally from Helena, Arkansas, became George Harmonica Smith when he hit the Los Angeles, California music scene. Before recording under his Hollywood artist name on the Toddlin Town label, he was smoking with carefree bluesy abandon on ten releases on the Soto Play label, this one being a prime example, perfect for an R&B dance floor.

Louis Johnson "Please Look Out" (Nighttime)
This nearly anonymous record on an anonymous looking label (which looks like a low budget re-issue label more than anything) credits the singer as also being the song writer. Roy Louis Johnson, where are you? Did you make other cool records or was this your one and only attempt at fame as an artist? This classic mournful sound that seems at once familiar has nearly no mention on that great accumulation of digital information, the internet, which just goes to show that modern technology has some catching up to do with actual culture.

Virgie Till "I Didn't Steal Your Dog" (Glover)
This is only a sporting guess but I'd make a wager that her full name is Virginia Tillman. I love this raucous and rolling all-American R&B sound; it is full of energy and life and humor and sass. Virgie lets rip for just under two minutes, she's a vocal powerhouse strutting her soulful stuff with the talented writing abilities of Glover and Levy to back her up.

Joe Fritz "Aww, She's A Stepper" (Jet Stream)
This Pasadena, Texas recording on the infamous Huey P. Meaux's label, Jet Stream, features Joe "Papoose" Fritz towards the end of his R&B recording career. If he's heading towards R&B retirement age, you sure can't hear it through the chugging rhythm and energetic vocals. "Stepper", in the colloquial speech, refers at one's ability to dance in a pleasing manner.

Honey Welch "Woman Child" (Lin)
This record label takes us from Pasadena to Gainesville, Texas, where the white artist, Honey Welch, wrote and performed this R&B-influenced swinging soul side. On the flipside of this obscure record it seems as if he's going more for a Bobby Goldsborough thing.

Mel Davis "Just Another Smile" (Golden State)
This raw boogaloo track from San Francisco is just this side of out-of-control, straddling the wall between harmony and discord. For as primitive a recording as it is, you can hear all the instruments in the studio racing each other to finish the song, such is the energy and spirit and thankfully good production values of this single.

Burt Ward's Band "Robin's Theme" (Soultown)
Don't worry, it's only on the other side of the record that you have to suffer The Warbling Wonder. This is the instrumental side and it is flawless and soulful and beautiful, all thanks to Bobby Sanders. Holy Los Angeles soul wax, Batman!

Albert George "Soul Baby" (Prince)
Another simple, catchy and raw pounder of a record from Los Angeles. They don't make records like they used to. Hell, they don't make records. I wasn't old enough to walk when records like this were being made, but I can just about remember when I was able to buy these records in Los Angeles and that's amazing to me now, in this day of computer auctions and such.

Johnny Praye "Can't Get Too Much Love" (Sidewalk)
An old-timey piano serves as introduction and is quickly drowned out by the stomping production. Not for the faint of heart. My copy for this record has an old grocery store price stamp of 29 whole cents, but I paid several dollars more than that. Again, that old daydream to go back travelling in time, sup with Jesus, swing by da Vinci's place, have a chat with Shakespeare, then pop into mid-20th century and rifle through those glorious bargain bins of discounted obscure soul records. The flipside of this record is good, too.

Little Willie Faulk "Look Into My Heart" (M&H)
This record is probably faster than what I could dance to unless under the influence of jet fuel, but I could sure give it a shot. Great Hammond organ underlies quick-fire drumming and hasty backing vocals. The singer is going for a Little Anthony style on the flipside but in this quick, quirky and funky side he's singing more from his heart and pleading his baby to have some sympathy. I understand this is a version of a Ree Flores song, written by George Flores, but I don't have that one on the label so can't say anything about that.

Ann Duquesnay "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man" (Capitol)
I have been casually collecting records on the Capitol label but only came across this when a friend travelled up to Canada and found two of the Capitol 45s on this fund-raiser compilation. This is sassy, brassy dancer is a blinder with great vibes (a real Capitol Records trademark, don't you think?) and perfect production, in large part due to Duquesnay's expert striding voice as well as the song-writing and arrangement and production values of Ronnie Savoy. Ann Duquesnay went on to become far more famous for her ensuing Broadway theatre singing/acting/composing career.

Diane Hogans "How Does It Feel" (Capitol)
Here's a lush number, which actually predates the previous record but due to its midtempo pace makes it somehow more contemporary to our times. Diane Hogans sounds like a very young, timorous, Dee Dee Warwick, and I mean that in the most complimentary way.

Magnificent Men "Lay Lady Lay" (Mercury)
This vocal group transferred their allegiance from Capitol Records to Mercury at some point in their history. Bob Dylan must be one of many antitheses of soul but this incredible version of one of his songs is grand, sweeping and unquestionably soulful. Now that's good song-writing.

Frank Hutson and the Exposures "Old Man Me" (Goodie Train)
Spare, elegant and refined, this oddball track struts along at its own gentle pace. The crisp drumming and subdued fretwork balance with the Exposures', the backing singers, haunting echo and Hutson's own tremulous tenor. Band and vocalists gain momentum over the brief three minute journey and finish all too quickly, like a slow-starting fire put out the moment you've become mesmerized by the flame.

Ruben Perez & The 13th Hour "You Girl" (Judnell)
Brown-eyed soul is offered up with great jazzy drumming, sparkling vibes, and a big fat horn section with that wide-open feel. This is music to be played from your front porch during a hot summer afternoon. And the flipside, "Homemade", is a precursor to low-rider music to come. Sorry 'bout the surface noise, folks!

Tom-Emmanuel and Ron Experience "When You Lose Your Groove" (Golden Three)
It was a really tough call which side of this record to put on the compilation. The easy going groove of this is pleasant enough but now I am thinking I might just prefer the moody midtempo on the flipside. Are you Tom-Emmanuel and Ron experienced? Well, now you are, with the loose production, straining vocal, catchy refrain and funky rhythm guitar.

David Morris "Snap Crackle Pop" (Plush)
Put aside the silly breakfast cereal title which couldn't be further from the essence of this lovely mid-seventies dancer from Philladelphia, PA. Great vocal and infectious melody, bubbling Hammond organ, choppy rhythm guitar, insistent rhythm all combine to pull you out onto the dance floor.

Nancy Wilson "There'll Always Be Forever" (Capitol)
Try to find a more beautiful and soaring and romantic song by Nancy Wilson. Go on, let's see you then. If I practiced transcendental meditation, this song would make me rise off the floor and float right out the window, in a full lotus position, right on up to the sun. That's how this record makes me feel. I think it helps me breathe better and remember important things. I have Nancy Wilson and Gene and Billy Page and Dee Ervin and D. McNeil to thank for these three minutes of utter bliss.

The Master Plan "Clinton Park" (De-lite)
In the same romantic, sweet and, admittedly, sentimental vein, is this fantastic vocal group finger snapper. Aside from the great production, superb vocals and harmonies, this ever so slightly funky mid-tempo has a surprise ending: ahhh! We've listened to this in the car millions of times and I have yet to tire of it.

The Headliners "Little Sister (Sho Nuf Fine)" (Super M)
Funky wah wah, jazzy flute and tight vocals join together in a connoisseur's call to get your groove on. It's uptite, all-rite, and outta-site.

Scheherezade "If You Don't Want My Love" (Mystic)
Stonking throwback disco from 1978. I've played this record for two house guests on two different occasions who gave it a penetrating look after hearing it, and then wrote down the label information. As you do.

Garry Glenn "I Need You In My Life" (PPL)
This is Eighties jazz funk from Detroit son, Garry Glenn. I would be very interested to hear his first LP on the PPL label from 1980, which seems to be widely available on CD and includes unreleased material.

Church "How Long" (Silas)
This song, arranged by Jdlinkomo (who is most likely also on vibes and backing vocals), meanders it's mellow way punctuated by layered vocals and dramatic pauses. It is simple, yet maintains your interest with it's creative and striking vocal arrangements and charming latin-influenced, jazzy instrumentation. At a certain point midway through the song you can hear someone shouting far off in the background, I thought it was our neighbors; the song should be called "How Odd".

Stephanie Clark "Liberate Yourself" (Sound & Soul)
Gorgeous deepie performed by Miss Black America 1971. I found images from a US military journal from the period, when she and other Miss Blacks from various states travelled to Vietnam to entertain troops. Where is Ms Clark now and what can she possibly think about the current Black standard of beauty, "Augmented Black Is Beautiful"?

Steve Parks "Still Thinking Of You" (Reynolds)
Haunting slowie from the same label that brought you Celeste Hardie. So slow, it nearly stops. So personal, it seems too sad to listen to. But, this is a universal sufferance shaped within a quietly beautiful ballad which pulls you along to the last flutterings of the flute, cello and acoustic guitar.

Tittyshakers

Jennie Lee, Queen of The Tittyshakers

Andre Williams Sweet Little Pussycat Wingate

Doris Beatmaker Odeon

I have recently found out that Martin of Soul Generation fame is starting a new website dedicated to Tittyshakers. Some of you might ask what are Tittyshakers?

Martin already has an excellent page on the subject and he defines Tittyshakers as:

The sound? Well fundamentally it is as the name implies, any form of music that makes you want to tear off your shirt and shake your titties, spinning the nipple tassels you are naturally wearing underneath your garments like the blades on a helicopter. Typically you will be grinding to the frantic beat doing the ‘Monkey’ or the ‘Dog' or the 'Shing-a-ling' or the 'Push and Pull' ... whatever dance steps that takes you really.

Martin goes on to document the origins of Tittyshakers starting in the 50's with sleazy joints playing any music with a rhythm for a girl to shake her assets to any drunken audience. The 60's saw the rise of the ‘Go-Go Dancer’ after girls performed in gilded cages at the legendary 'Whiskey A Go Go' on the Sunset Strip in LA. The girls would grind out their stuff to the grooves laid down by the DJs. Short mini skirts and long boots became the standard outfit which has become associated with go go dancing . Soon every discotheque and club had dancers and TV shows such as Hulabaloo through to local shows such as The Beat had go go dancers behind the acts or leading the dancing to discs or bands.

Martin explains how Tittyshaking has developed into a craze for recent times. He documents that dance parties in the late 80’s and early 90’s that started utilising Go-Go girls coupled with explosive psychedelic visuals. In recent years , DJs such as Mr Finewine and DJ Franco at gigs such as “Vampyros Lesbos’ in New York City have included dancers such as Jaiko Suzuki and Viva Knievel. The craze seems to be developing all over the US and Europe and many of the events advertised on IDR have go go dancers. The craze must also be seen alongside the Burlesque thing which is also permeating the club scene in the UK.

Martin has several playlists on his Soul Generation site featuring his recommended Tittyshakers as well as playlists from Mr Finewine, Jazzman Gerald, Ms Shing A Ling and Daddy Bones.

I will keep you posted on Martin's new website but in the meantime I have posted up 2 tracks which are classic Tittyshakers.

Vintage Record Sleeves

In the recent celebration of vinyl, there was a constant underlying theme of the beauty of the vinyl album. An important element in the beauty of vinyl albums are the covers which act as protection, adverts and dispensers of information on the product they contain.

There are many sites on the Net which are dedicated to the album sleeve as a work of art. I have recently discovered Japanese site which specialises in the jazz label Bluenote. The site contains not only the front covers but the reverse sides as well. Drop over and salivate at the sights there!

Smashed! Blocked! 7/9/07

Paynes Cafe Royal Llandudno Wales

I must admit that I have always had a soft spot for Llandudno in North Wales because of all the fun I've had there since I was kid back in the early 60's and I continue to drop by even now.

Llandudno has always been synonmous with soul music as are most seaside towns in the UK. Each year, workers and holiday makers migrated to the coast in the summer taking their music with them and would join forces with local soulies.

One of the most famous clubs associated with soul in North Wales was Paynes Cafe Royal. I recently fell on the Paynes Reunion site which is full of wondeful atmospheric photos from a lost age! Here is what they have to say about the club:

Paynes was that wonderful place on Mostyn Street, where the youth of Llandudno (and the rest of North Wales) gathered to bop the night away to soulful sounds of the sixties and seventies. It's really bizarre, but some of the friendships / relationships and even marriages which were started back in the days of Paynes Cafe Royal (every Saturday and Wednesday, and Mondays and Friday at the height of the summer season) are still going strong today. It has been really good knowing that you will be able to catch up with old friends at least twice a year thanks to the reunions, and of course its a good excuse to dig out those dancing shoes (that's you Mike Smith), blow off the cobwebs and move with the groove once more. Despite the aching legs next morning.

The reunions have been held annually, usually at the North Wales Conference Centre (Nov) and the Grand Hotel (March/April), and have always been a sell out event.
This year will be the 12th anniversary of the reunion so make sure you get those tickets early to avoid disappointment. The night promises to be fantastic night of dancing to all your old favourite soul and northern tunes together with a fantastic live act. An excellent night out and support for your local charities, what could be better.

"Get Ready 'Cos Were Gonna Swing, We're Goin', goin' goin' to A Happening"

Over the last eleven years we have had some memorable reunions with most of them being absolute sell-outs, resulting in many people panicking at the last minute because they did not have tickets (that's usually Jimmy). On average each event has sold 500 or so tickets to us "people of later years" (blame that one on Paul Rocky) and has had us groove the night away to the soul sounds of the 60ts and 70ts, and a good time was had by all.

The November Reunionsat the Conference Centre has seen many fine act appear to entertain us on the evening. I can recall that the band for the very first reunion were called The Informers, an eight piece band with two vocalists, 3 brass, rhythm and bass guitar and drums. They did a really good set and included many tunes that were played at The Twisted Wheel. They really impressed me because they opened their set with a version of My Elusive Dream / Moses & Joshua Dillard, absolutely excellent.

Since then we have had appearances from The Real Thing, The Aces, Kenny Weathers & the Emotions, The American Four Tops Show, The Extreme Supremes and of course the absolute master visited us twice and was a very good friend of the reunions, sadly is no longer with us, none other than the late great Edwin Starr. Have a look at the top of the Paynes photo page to see Edwin back in the early 70ts standing on the stairs in Paynes. Edwin ALWAYS gave us a great night, singing all the Motown and Ric-Tic classics (usually at some stage with his backing singers, Sue Jones & Co).

Have a good look around the web site, we hope you enjoy the visit.

Monk Higgins The Look Of Slim Solid State LP

Marilyn Barbarin

Marilyn Barbarian Will You Still Love Me Olympia
Marilyn whose voice and style remind me of Candi Staton recorded at least four 45’s. She teamed up with veteran arranger Wardell Quezergue for an interesting double-sider “Make It Alone”/ “Stop Before You Start” for the Virgil label.Virgil Engeran who wrote both sides of the 45 probably owned the Virgil label. “Make It Alone” is a clip clop beater in the style of Candi’s Warners mid 70’s sides and has a lovely 30 seconds plus fade out with her pleading she “Can’t Make It Alone”.

“Stop Before You Start” is faster and busier and sounds influenced by Gloria Gaynor with more high hat and but it has some irritating breaks, which spoil the overall song though it really cooks towards the end as Marilyn again lets go. Both sides have full production including strings and must have been recorded in the late 70’s. One feature of these 2 tracks is the excellent backing female vocals.

Marilyn also had another mid tempo track “Will You Still Love Me” which she wrote for the Olympia label probably around the late 70’s/early 80’s and is again very influenced by Candi Staton. The track was recorded at the Pace Sound Recording studios and Wilson Victorian arranged the song with the Bayou Renegades on backing. She also had an Eddie Bo produced funk classic “Reborn” with the Soul Finders on Bo Sound 106 which crops on several New Orleans Funk orientated CD’s. I have also heard a nice ballad by her called “Tell Me Why” which is included on an MG CD “New Orleans Second Line Mardi Gras Party”.

She was still performing in New Orleans in the late 90’s as the featured vocalist in Walter Washington’s band and performed in the New Orleans Blues Project. She is also a Musical Ambassador for The New Orleans Blues Highway. The most recent recording I can find by her is the backing vocals she did for a release by Timothea for the Louisiana Music Factory label in 2000. She is also getting plays with her early Nola 45 “Just A Teenager”, which I have yet to hear and believe to be an R&B side. She could possibly have recorded for the Syla label in the 80’s/90’s because I have seen a publicity photo of her, which mentions that she was one of their artists.

Rhetta Hughes You're Doing It With Her Tetragrammaton

Rhetta Hughes You're Doing It With Her Tetragrammaton

Quite simply one of my favourite femme sides from an outstanding 60's album. You can find this on Jazzman's Sisters Funk CD but you will need to dig to dind the album.

Kip Anderson RIP

I found out late last week that Kip Anderson died on 29th August 2007. It was with particular sadness that I learnt of his death. I have met many soul singers but he was one artist who really touched me when I met him in Utrecht in the early Millennium. I spent an afternoon with Kip listening to his life story and later that evening I spent several hours hanging out with him backstage after his performance at the Blues Estafette in Utrecht.

I will be back with a full tribute to Kip later on this week. In the meantime, here is an obituary from the Independent Mail.com Anderson, South Carolina:

ANDERSON COUNTY — Kip Anderson could tell stories about hanging out with the likes of The Beatles, Etta James and Paul McCartney. His voice had been recorded featured on more than 50 recordings. And Europe was his home for a part of his life.

But at the end of it all, he was a man from Starr — once a boy who started singing alongside his mother in a church choir.

On Wednesday morning, Mr. Anderson, a leader in the regional rhythm and blues scene, died at the age of 69 at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson. While the exact cause of death has not been reported, family members said Mr. Anderson had suffered difficulties with his heart the past few years.

He was a man who could talk to The Beatles and reach his hand out to a homeless person on the street. Conversations with him were always upbeat and full of life, said people who knew him. But when he played — that was something unique, said Damon Downs, owner of Electric City Records.

“Kip would walk in and say, ‘Where’s the piano? Turn one on for me,’ “ Mr. Downs said. “This song would come belting out. It would send tingles up and down your spine. You knew you were hearing something special.”

Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Anderson performed at The Gray House in Starr, hosted a Sunday gospel show on WRIX-FM (103.1 FM) in Anderson, served as the vice president of Electric City Record’s gospel division and was the minister of music at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

It was at that very church where he started his singing career. Then he sang alongside his mother, Willie Mae Anderson, who would play the piano.
But at the age of 13, the bright young man would take his talent on the road with gospel music legend Madame Edna Gallman Cooke. He would tour the country with Ms. Cooke during the summers.
His first solo recording, “I Wanna Be the Only One,” came out in 1959 during his college years at South Carolina State University.

From there he would sing with well-known rhythm and blues artists, The Drifters, Sam Cooke, Jerry Butler and Jackie Wilson. Throughout the ’60s and ’70s, Mr. Anderson would travel the globe performing and meeting musicians like Paul McCartney and Etta James.

Troubled times would later bring Mr. Anderson home.

By the 1980s, he was back in Anderson County, living on family’s land in Starr. And he returned to the stage where he began — Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. For three years, Mr. Anderson has led the church’s four choirs and its musicians.

“I’m going to miss his singing and his performing on Sunday morning during worship,” said Rev. Stephon Gilliard, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church’s pastor. “He just had a way of just pulling people together.”

The reason he could do that was because of his humble nature, said Catherine Nesbitt, one of Mr. Anderson’s relatives. Mr. Anderson’s parents are both deceased. He was not married. And he was an only child. But he has several cousins, aunts and uncles.

“He was the kind of person who could talk to anybody,” Ms. Nesbitt said. “He especially had a heart for people who were homeless or downtrodden. He would employ them to do work for them around the house.

“Everybody who knew Kip loved him. We are all sad. But we know he’s in heaven, he’s with the Father.”

Funeral arrangements are being planned through the Marcus D. Brown Funeral Home.
Please also visit this tribute to Kip.
Kip Anderson RIP

Calvin Arnold Mini Skirt Venture

Calvin Arnold Mini Skirt Venture

I am not sure which soul recording first mentioned the mini skirt in it's lyrics - perhaps it was Mack Rice Mini-Skirt Minnie Stax. The mini skirt was frequently referred to in mid to late 60's soul songs as was another fashion the hot pants in the early 70's.

Radio Free Dixie

I recently came across this interesting book - here is the blurb:

This book tells the remarkable story of Robert F. Williams--one of the most influential black activists of the generation that toppled Jim Crow and forever altered the arc of American history. In the late 1950s, as president of the Monroe, North Carolina, branch of the NAACP, Williams and his followers used machine guns, dynamite, and Molotov cocktails to confront Klan terrorists. Advocating "armed self-reliance" by blacks, Williams challenged not only white supremacists but also Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights establishment. Forced to flee during the 1960s to Cuba--where he broadcast "Radio Free Dixie," a program of black politics and music that could be heard as far away as Los Angeles and New York City--and then China, Williams remained a controversial figure for the rest of his life.

Historians have customarily portrayed the civil rights movement as a nonviolent call on America's conscience--and the subsequent rise of Black Power as a violent repudiation of the civil rights dream. But Radio Free Dixie reveals that both movements grew out of the same soil, confronted the same predicaments, and reflected the same quest for African American freedom. As Robert Williams's story demonstrates, independent black political action, black cultural pride, and armed self-reliance operated in the South in tension and in tandem with legal efforts and nonviolent protest.

Emerald City Soul Club Rare Soul Weekender 2007 in Seattle

Kevin Jones just mailed me to let me know that tickets are on sale now for the above:

Emerald City Soul Club is a rare soul dance night in Seattle, Washington, specializing in 60’s and 70’s soul with a “Northern Soul” slant, played exclusively on original 45rpm vinyl. We are extremely proud to present the first ever Rare Soul Weekender of this size and scale ever to be held in Seattle—an entire weekend devoted to Northern Soul—culminating with live performances by JJ Barnes and The Brothers of Soul.

The rare soul movement celebrates the artists who recorded with low-budget, independent labels out of Detroit, Chicago and from all around the country that didn’t deliver the necessary promotion and play in the U.S. during the 1960’s. These records were celebrated in England, however, and the artists suddenly found themselves charting in the U.K. years after their original releases, as their music packed U.K. dance floors.

Today, the scene continues to thrive in both the U.K. as well as the U.S., and in some seemingly unexpected ways. Ruben Molina, author of “Chicano Soul: Recordings and History of an American Culture,” speaks about soul’s influence on the Latino communities of Southern California: “Growing up in East Los Angeles, with the guns and the drugs and our parents screaming at each other, we became hard, lost touch of our emotions. Soul allowed us to express ourselves – you love someone? Dedicate them a song. You broke up? Say you’re sorry through a song. Today’s music has none of that feeling, none of that affection.”

For young and old, seasoned collectors and the uninitiated—soul music continues to inspire devotees worldwide. Emerald City Soul Club is proud to be a catalyst towards that effort, and we look forward to making you a part of it as well.

See you in November!

Tickets now on sale from here:

The Meaning Of Louie: A Documentary by Eric Predoehl and Jesse Block

Fell on this new movie in the making on MySpace by Director's Eric Predoehl and Jesse Block.
The Meaning of LOUIE is a documentary many years in the making. It..s a quest to uncover the real story of the world's most misunderstood rock and roll song. It's the story about Richard Berry, the Kingsmen, Jack Ely, Rockin.. Robin Roberts, the Fabulous Wailers, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Mark Lindsay, Little Bill Engelhart, Dave Lewis, Ron Holden & the Playboys, the Frantics, the Sonics, Iggy Pop & the Stooges, Toots & the Maytals, Motorhead, Black Flag, Frank Zappa & the Mothers of Invention, Michael Doucet & BeauSoleil, the Sandpipers, and every other band that embraced this song, and took this simple little melody to new plateaus.
This is a story of both famous and obscure musicians that have personal histories with this iconic song. This is the story of the song that was investigated by the F.B.I. for supposedly obscene lyrics. This is the story of the song that inspired movements in the state of Washington and Oregon to declare it as an official rock song. The influence of this one little song is enormous.

This documentary has had a very interesting story in its own right.

I'll keep you posted on progress.

East Of Eden Soul Express Tonite

Have a good one guys - check out John Ciba's and James Porter's MySpace

This is what the guys say about what they are up to:

East of Edens Soul Express DJs merged out of a common interest in the connection of Southern soul and the Black music scene in Chicago during the 60s and 70s. James grew up in Chicago's Chatham neighborhood buying records like Bill Coday's "I'm Back to Collect" when they were being played on the radio for the first time and picking up that curious looking Swamp Dogg LP in the cut-out bin. Having a deep love for punk, rockabilly, and country as well as the blues and soul he grew up on, Porter identified with the mishmash of styles that stemmed from Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and Nashville. John grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and was raised on the Allman Brothers, Little Feat, and the Band. After being enlightened by mixing a broken heart with Al Green's 'Gets Next to You' and Isaac Hayes' 'Hot Buttered Soul', he was on a search to connect his musical past with these spine-tingling soulful finds. Ciba stumbled upon copies of Peter Guralnick's 'Sweet Soul Music' and Barney Hoskyns 'Say it One Time for The Broken Hearted' and the worlds of Muscle Shoals, Jackson, and beyond were opened to him. Thousands of LPs and 45s later he hasn't quite found the tingle again but loves sharing the deepest and funkiest cuts with anybody that will listen. After brushing shoulders on a Southern Soul message board, seeing each other at shows and record stores, and having plenty of common friends, the guys decided to start playing some records together. East of Edens Soul Express have a monthly DJ night at the Hideout Inn, Chicago. The venue is a perfect fit, it's the closest to a Southern juke joint this side of, well, the Edens Expressway! The boys have opened for Bettye Lavette, Clarence Reid, and are happy to lay it down for parties and the occasional wedding. John and James will always pack a dancefloor by playing soul music from Curtis Mayfield to Inell Young with one rule: the grittier the better!

Eli "Paperboy" Reed@ The Boogaloo London

Eli @ The Boogaloo 30/8/07 Courtesy Nick Sands

My mate Nick Sands just posted me about the great night he had seeing Eli "Paperboy" Reed performing a the Boogaloo Club in London:
Eli was great and really tore into the songs. He did all 4 sides of his singles and knocked everybody for six with his 'It's easier' deepie. He basically did the entire set he does with the band, but with just an electric guitar and I hardly missed the group. Chicano Soul: Recordings & History Of An American Culture

An old mate, Dave Withers just mailed me to let me know that Ruben Molina has published the above which compliments his first book "The Old Barrio Guide To Low Rider Music".
Here's Ruben's blurb on the book:

The book covers the sixties musicians and R&B/Soul recordings of the Southwest (San Antonio to Los Angeles) and is loaded with photos, record labels, album covers and posters. Plus info on Mexican American soul singers and groups including; Joe Jama, Royal Jesters, Eptones, Sunny and the Sunliners, Little Joe and the Latinaires , Thee Midniters, Romancers, Freddie Chavez, Dimas III, Soulsations, Soul Setters , Bobby Rosales and many more.
You can buy the book direct from Ruben Molina.
While you are avisting his site why not buy his first book "The Old Bario Guide". Here's a description of the book:
Since the forties Mexican-American teens have been drawn to African-American music of all kinds. jazz, rhythm and blues, group harmony (doo-wop), soul, funk and most recently rap and hip hop. Since the mid-fifties one group in particular the pachuco a.k.a. cholo has adopted select R&B grinders and tearjerkers (ballads) to provide the sound track for his most prized possession, the low rider.
Early on it was the sound of Don Julian, Jesse Belvin, the Velvetones and Shirley and Lee. It was the sound of El Monte Legion Stadium, Art Laboe, the Shrine Auditorium and Huggy Boy and the sound of Whittier Blvd. By the early sixties homeboys and homegirls were digging the sounds of the Metallics, Billy Stewart, the Blendtones and the up and coming East Side Sound of the Romancers, the Premiers, Thee Midniters and Cannibal and the Headhunters. When disco took the world by storm in the early seventies the homeboys stayed true to those R&B tunes now known as "Oldies but Goodies" a term coined by Art Laboe in 1958.
The hey day of the barrio low rider has passed. Southern California's cruising spots like Whittier Blvd., Van Nuys, and San Fernando's Mission Park have been closed to cruising since around 1975. Teen dances are also a thing of the past and "oldies" stations are dedicated to the Beatles and Beach Boys. However, the underground market for sixties and seventies R&B and soul has produced a new phase in the low rider sound.
Seven years of research and hard work have produced the first book ever to chronicle the music of the low rider. Interviews with artist and record company owners like Frankie Karl, George Kerr, Weldon McDougal (Harthon), Chuck Corby, Richard Poindexter, Freddie Hughes, Mickey Lespron (El Chicano), Little Ray Jimenez, Tommy Turner, Chris Ollan (Natural Four), Joe Evans, Gene Dozier, Skip Mahoney, Sunny Ozuna, Jimmy Pipkin (Gallahads), Art Laboe, Huggy Boy, Jimmy Conwell and Anthony Renfro plus many others have helped to make this book one of a kind. Listed in alphabetical order by artist the book supplies all group members, group or artist history, city of origin and a low rider discography. The new third edition also includes a list of CD's where every song can be found. Approx 140 artist photos and several Southern California dance posters and flyers from the fifties and sixties are included.

The Heeey Baby Days Of Beach Music

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been digesting one of the most wonderful books on music I have ever read by Greg Haynes called "The Heeey Baby Days Of Beach Music". The book is not only a work of love and passion by Greg but it also a truly magnificent record of a lost era of soul music. The book is full of facts supported by a tremendous collection of photos which brings the golden era of Beach Music to life. The book also comes with a 2 CD set of rare sounds which you can listen to while you read the book - what could be more perfect?
Greg & his wife Nora 2004
The best thing to do to get an insight into the book is to visit Greg's website and read the reviews or download a chapter or just gaze at some of the photos of the bands included in the book.
Here is what Greg has to say about the writing of the book:
After spending over thirty five years reminiscing about those few years he had as a band promoter, Greg decided in late 2001 that he would memorialize a few of the interesting and fun events that happened in the mid to late 60’s when the bands of the Southeast were making parties in auditoriums, national guard armories, fraternity houses, and other venues. The original intent was to primarily focus on only the bands and performers that he had a direct connection with in the 60’s either as a promoter, booking agent, or party participate. Curiosity and interest segued into learning more about some of the other bands and groups that made the music and party of the 60’s so special in the southeast. Soul Music was the music of choice and groups that offered a strong play list of such in those days were sought out. It turned into a bottomless pit. A nice pit, but larger than ever expected. Bands that featured large horn sections like the Swingin’ Medallions, Bill Deal & the Rhondels, the In-Men Ltd., The Pieces of Eight, King David & the Slaves, the Jesters, the Men of Distinction, Sensational Epics, Tyn Tymes, the Attractions and others were the groups that were thought to be the primary players but it was quickly realized that other bands could also make that great music using genuine instruments other than horns and were quite revered at the 60’s party scene. They included groups from all over the southeast such as Bob Collins & the Fabulous Five, the Monzas, the Georgia Prophets, the Rockin’ Gilbraltars, Mouse, the Boys & Brass and the pit deepens. Then a credibility issue arose with the use of the “Beach Music” in the title of the book. How possibility could one use such nomenclature without spotlighting the bands and groups that have made the genre such a significant music form such as the Embers, the Catalinas, Bob Meyer & the Riverias, the Spontanes, and three hundred other bands in North Carolina alone?
It occurred to me the most important two words in the book would be “and others.” The book was essentially finished in the spring in 2003. However, after meeting Julian Fowler, of Florence, S.C. “and others,” I realized the book would not be finished until he “and others” are satisfied all the bands and groups that made the party music some call Beach Music and the Carolinas are totally identified.
One of the reasons the book has grown to such proportions is the result of our initial research back in 2001. It concerned us when we tried to find information on the internet about groups like Bob Collins & the Fabulous Five and King David & The Slaves, we got very little. While we do not expect the book will be a complete anthology of the party bands of the south in the 60’s, we think it will be a start.
Greg Haynes, DJ & Radio Presenter Richard Searling and Mark Speakman of Funky Feet Records

During the summer just gone, Greg came over to the UK to promote his book and one of the people who helped him was Mark Speakman of Funky Feet Records based in Rhyl, Wales. I got my copy of the book from Mark and you can still order the book direct from him.

One of the artists featured in the book is Bob Collins & The Fabulous Five and I have picked out their 45 on Mainline to go with this postBob Collins & The Fabulous Five Inventory On Heartaches Main Line

If you only buy one book this year then make it this one - you won't be disappointed!

Thanks to Greg and Mark for the use of the photos in this post
