Eddie Jefferson So What Prestige
Following on from the previous post on Miles Davis's "So What", I thought I would post up Eddie Jefferson's defence of Miles Davis and John Coltrane.
Eddie Jefferson used the Miles Davis's riffs to form the basis of his vocal called "So What" which he recorded several times in his career. The version above is from his 1968 album "There I Go Again" for Prestige. The songs lyrics refer to an infamous moment in the '50s when Miles and Coltrane were not happy with their performance and walked off stage to practise before returning to the stage. I have read all about this incident but cannot recall where!!

Actually- Eddie Jefferson didn't write "So What"- he performed "So What". The lyrics to "So What" and "Bitches Brew" were written by artist Christopher Acemandese Hall. Chris was an African Historian and commercial artist who was very influential in the 'Black is Beautiful' movement.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the clarification. Both Eddie Jefferson and Chris Acemandese Hall were good friends and I had the pleasure performing with Eddie Jefferson during the 70's. Chris also penned the lyrics to Tranes Blues Both were great lyricist. See www.myspace.com/eddiejefferson listen to "Next In Line". More at the www.washingtondcjazznetwork.ning.com
