Harvey Averne Wishing & Hoping

Harvey Averne Dozen Wishing & Hoping Atlantic LP Viva Soul
Viva Soul is a cracking album of Latin Soul tunes recorded by Harvey Averne, one of the heaviest hitting producers of the New York scene of the late 60s! The album's one of the few that Harvey issued under his own name, and it features him on piano and vibes, working with arrangements by Marty Sheller, and a tight batch of studio players who cook up the grooves in a classic Fania/Tico style! The album's got some very groovy originals -- like "The Micro Mini", "You're No Good", "My Dream", and "You Mess My Mind Up" -- plus covers, like "The Think Drink Theme", "The Word", plus the track I have chosen - "Wishing & Hoping".

You can read more about Harvey in a post by Larry Grogan on Funky 16 Corners here:

http://funky16corners.blogspot.com/2005/08/harvey-averne-band-stand.html

Also don't forget the ever excellent Vampi Soul's release of Never Here:

Never Here is the definition of Latin Soul crossover! With instrumental renderings of pop and soul classics, and a few original tracks, all of this music has a loud "Latino con Soul" feel! With the help of Marty Sheller, this album reaches the classic status of his work with Mongo Santamaria. Titles include: "Gotta Do My Number"; "Can You Dig It"; "Accept Me"; "Dynamite"; "Girl That I Love"; and "The Beat Goes On". It hits HARD! Let's face it; this is Harvey Averne's best album!

Gregory Johnson A New Hip

I have been searching through CDBaby this week which is still an excellent source of new releases. I came across this newish release from Gregory Johnson who is best known for his work with Cameo.

Here is his blurb on CDBaby

From an early age Gregory demonstrated a facility with the piano. Encouraged by his parents, along with singing in his church's choir, he began taking lessons in classical piano from the choir director.

After many years of being under the tutelage of teachers and family influences, Gregory began using his ability to play by ear to pick out his favorite tunes from the radio. He was inspired by the sounds of "The In Crowd," by Ramsey Lewis, and "Soulful Strut," by Young Holt Unlimited. After the latter, classical music was no longer his focus. Archie Bell and the Drells' "Tighten Up" was the hit of the moment and Gregory formed his own band, performing the R&B songs that were climbing the charts at that time. While attending a community talent show, featuring bands that were, by Gregory's estimation, "Happening!" he struck up the beginnings of a long artistic collaboration with Larry Blackmon. Upon being asked, he joined Mr. Blackmon's band. Later on in their initial association, they began calling themselves "The Mighty Gees."

Working together, Gregory and Larry earnestly pursued their dreams of being successful in the music industry. Initially, the pair sought success through backing up Howard Kinney, and the vocal group, Top Shelf. They eventually became part of Willie Feaster and The Mighty Magnificent's Concrete Wall. Along the way, they evolved into East Coast, featuring Gwen Guthrie, then, morphed into The New York City Players. However, just before the release of the group's first single, the popular group, The Ohio Players took issue with the similarity in the groups' names. Leading them finally, in 1973 to jell into the ensemble group Cameo.

With Cameo, Gregory has to his credit five gold records. Much later, through a writing credit, he received a platinum record from Boyz II Men's album, "Evolution."

Gregory left Cameo in October of 1982 to reevaluate his life and pursuits. Thereafter, he focused on finishing his education in music. After auditioning, Mr. Johnson was accepted into The Manhattan School of Music. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Music Composition and a Masters Degree in Piano Performance as well.

Gregory continues actively engaged in music. He has performed as a solo pianist, played keyboards for various groups including Slave. He enjoys continuing the education of other aspiring musicians by teaching piano and is currently a consultant for a large audio department in a major retail establishment.

His currently released CD is a new journey into a no holds barred style. In the Smooth Jazz tradition the roots of hip and slick still reveal themselves.

Ed Bland & Pazant Bros

Pazant Bros You've Got To Do Your Best Vanguard
I have mentioned the Office Naps blog before on IDR as a place to visit and this week when I dropped over I found a post on Ed Bland's productions. Please drop over to Office Naps, and as a taster, I've posted the above track by the Pazant Brothers from their 1975 album Loose & Juicy on Vanguard which was produced by Ed Bland. The album was reissued a few years back and may still be available. However, you can also get an excellent CD of their recordings from BGP called The Brothers Funk.

Mindblowing funk from one of the greatest combos on the New York scene of the early 70s -- Pazant Brothers Eddie & Al, heard here on a host of their greatest recordings! The package goes way past any other Pazant reissues we've seen -- and features not only work from the group's famous Vanguard album, but way way more work from a host of early singles for the RCA, GWP, and Vigor labels! The 22 track package is overstuffed with horn-heavy funky grooves that mark the Pazants as one of the hottest things going at the time -- snapping on the beat with a tightness learned from their old boss Pucho, but also a willingness to explore brassier grooves in a style that seems to be influenced from the New Orleans and Texas scenes of the late 60s. Producer/arranger Edward Bland had a good hand in much of this work -- giving the tracks a gritty, nitty, Perception/Today kind of groove -- and a few of the very best numbers on the record even bring in some wicked scratchy guitar into the mix! Includes early and later (Vanguard) versions of "Skunky Juice", "New Orleans", "Toe Jam", "Work Song", and "A Gritty Nitty" -- plus "Chick A Boom", "Greasy Greens", "Fever", "Juicy Lucy", "Chicken Scratch", "Fly Vines", and "Back To Beaufort". (Dusty Groove).

You can also now pick up a live set from the brothers recorded back in the 70's called Live At Museum Of Modern Art.

A lost funky treasure -- never issued before! For those not in the know, The Pazant Brothers (Ed & Al) were a duo of funky hornmen that first came to fame working with Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers -- and then moved onto cut some great funky records of their own in the 70s. The pair formed a very tight group that had a killer funky sound -- one that we'd easily rank right up there with the JBs and The Meters for hard, raw, power -- but sadly, they only ever recorded one full album and a handful of singles -- which is why this previously unissued concert is even more of an important treat! We have no idea what the folks at MOMA were thinking when they invited the Pazants down to get their groove in gear -- but whatever the case, this CD is totally great! Forget the silly cover -- which is way too cold and modern to get at the heart of the grooves -- and forget the location too, because the tracks on the set sound like they were cut at some smoky club in Harlem, not in the colder midtown setting of MOMA. The whole thing's totally great -- a massive batch of instrumental funk that leaves us to wonder why the heck this thing was never issued at the time. Titles include "Groovin", "Skunk Juice", "P Soul", "Fly Vines", "Work Song", "Momma Momma", "We Got More Soul", "Clabber Biscuits", and "Greasy Greens". Totally great! (Dusty Groove)

Al "Jazzbo" Collins

I recently came across Wally Wood's illustration of Jazzbo broadcasting from his mythical Purple Grotto, from 'What's All This Jazz About Jazz?', a story appearing in MAD magazine #31 in 1957 and decided to find out more by him.

Al "Jazzbo" Collins was a hipster saint, radio legend on two coasts, jazz icon. His theme song was "Blues In Hoss' Flat," written by Frank Foster and performed by the Count Basie Orchestra.

In the Bay Area, Jazzbo was beloved on KSFO, KMPX, KGO, KAPX and KCSM for four decades, splitting for the East Coast in between, but always returning to the West Coast right to the very end of his life in 1997.

Blue 45s The Ultimate Jukebox

At one time, I used to collect Blue Note 45s but sadly I let them all go many years ago. Therefore, I was pleased to see the above collection and now I can get some of them back in this inspired compilation.

Very cool new compilation that brings to light a side of Blue Note that's been long neglected over the years -- the label's firm dedication to putting out 45 rpm versions of some of their bigger tracks, or some of the material that was more oriented towards the groovy jukebox crowd. This CD contains 21 tracks that fall into that vein, and all of them are the versions that were released by Blue Note as 7" singles during the 60's for consumption by the singles crowd. Tracks include "Camp Meetin'" by Don Wilkerson, "Blue Bossa" by Joe Henderson, "Fungii Mama" by Blue Mitchell, "I Know" by Freddie Roach, "Bucket" by Jimmy Smith, "Spanish Harlem" by Bobbi Humphrey, and lots lots more! The CD's got a great set of notes on the 45 years for Blue Note, and the music grooves nicely, and sounds like you've found a great little jukebox stuffed away in a remote tavern on the south side! (Dusty Groove)

Golden State Funk

I have been asked by a few people to provide my list of top CDs of the year and this one would certainly be in there from the ever consistent BGP label. I am always a sucker of anything from the Bay Area and this CD certainly increased my knowledge of the area's contribution to music.

They're not lying about the "impossibly rare" part of the title here -- because most of the work on this set is previously unreleased -- funky Bay Area gems recorded in the late 60s and early 70s, finally seeing the light of day on this collection! The music represents a much deeper current of soul than you might know from Sly & The Family Stone or some of the bigger bay area groups of the period -- a really righteous batch of tracks that freak out nicely with a heady, jamming groove -- one that's often heavy on the basslines and drums, but which also has a celebratory, party-hearty quality in the vocals and other instrumentation. A few artists here are familiar, but most are relatively obscure -- and the biggest portion of this music has languished for years in the vaults of the Golden State Recorders studios of producer Leo Kulka. CD features 20 tracks in all -- including "Super Chicken" by Ramona King, "Rock Steady" by Ruby Delicious, "Devil's Got Your Mind" by San Francisco TKOs, "Hearing Things" by Snooky & The Cosmic Flowers, "I've Gotta Groove" by Julio Zavalla, "Love Machine" by Alonzo Smith, "Poor Sad Child (parts 1 & 2)" by The Windjammers, "Are You Together For The New Day" by The Love Experience, "Can't Get Enough" by 87th Off Broadway, "House Party" by Wally Cox & The Natives, "I'm Glad I Got Over You" by Jeanette Jones, "Sweet Talk" by Marvin Holmes & The Uptights, and "Vida Blue (part 1)" by Jimmy Bee. (Dusty Groove).

Here's the tracklisting:

01. Windjammers - Poor Sad Child
02. Love Experience - Are You Together For The New Day
03. 87th Off Broadway - Can't Get Enough
04. San Francisco TKO's - Devils' Got Your Mind

Hammond Heroes

Here's another Hammond CD for this morning.

A great collection of 60s Hammond organ groovers -- and from sources you might not normally expect! Given the fame of jazz players on the instrument -- like Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff -- it's easy to forget how many rock and roll groups were also playing the Hammond in the 60s -- clearly inspired by the work of Smith, McGriff, and others -- but taking the instrument into a unique pre-fusion world that blended together rock, soul, jazz, and funk! And while much of the groups' work on organ was often overlooked alongside their more famous vocals, this set really corrects that fact by bringing together an all-instrumental lineup -- 23 tracks pulled from lost albums and singles from some of the best of the British scene at the time -- the cream of the crop of the beat group generation who were so influenced by American soul and jazz! Titles include "Stevie's Groove" by Spender Davis Group, "Jumping Jack Flash" by Wynder K Frog, "Zoom Widge & Wag" by Bobby Graham, "Working Out" by Dave Davani, "Adventures Of A Young Organ" by Ten Years After, "Jive Samba" by Remo Four, "Horses Cellar" by Peddlers, "Zoot's Sermon" by Zoot Money, "Critic's Choice" by Alan Price Set, and "Impressions Of Oliver" by Herd. (Dusty Groove)

Broke'n Blue Boogaloo on Subcity Radio

Just picked up a mesage on the Broke'N Blue Boogaloo show on the Subcity station.

The show is described as:

The sound of a cotton field in Georgia, a prison in Mississippi, a church in Alabama, a parade in New Orleans, a studio in Memphis, a bar in Chicago, a factory in Detroit, and a basement in New York all rolled into one. Every week we serve up an hour chock full of chunky boogaloo, barrelhouse blues, sock hop swing, dancefloor jazz and dirty down home funk. We spin everything from the slinky, sleazy, sultry and sassy, to the deep, dark, and downright depraved. Expect hip-shakin' hammonds, screeching horns and full fat breaks, alongside honky tonk pianos, gritty vocals and 12 string guitars. Harrowing gutter blues, and rough tough slabs of funk, sit with blissful bossa novas, and relentless boogaloo workouts; in an all encompassing celebration of soul music.

The Rubber Room 14/12/07

I was recently in touch with Martin Lawrie one of the promoters of the above event so I thought I'd give the night another shout!

Lava Lounge

The Lava Lounge , Firebug bar, Leicester. 3rd weekend of every month. Where else in Leicester can you can hear the wildest, sickest rock and roll, the most luscious lounge, ethereal exotica, raw 60s garage, swinging surf, greasy soul, sleazy grind, explosive soundtracks, wailing hammond, sneaky spy themes, spaceage pop and everything else that is trashy, swanky and fun? All in one action packed evening a month, upstairs at the Firebug, Millstone Lane.

Regular readers of the blog may have guessed by now that I love flyers! The Lava Lounge produces some killers - her's one from October:
There is such a proliferation of flyers on the Net - I do hope someone is preserving them because they are an art form in their own right.

Alex Brown I'm In Love Tangerine

Alex Brown in LA 2004
Alex Brown I'm In Love Tangerine
OK! We are back with the music! I dug out Alex Brown's I'm In Love inspired by my recent post on the CD Northern Soul Of Tangerine. I gorgeous mid-tempo number from the pen of Dee Ervin and produced by David Braithwaite who was responsible for some cracking productions in the TRC Studios in LA during the 60's and 70's.
I will write more about Alex one day because she has had such a prolific career as a singer and songwriter that deserves to be told in full - a case of watch this space for when I transcribe all our conversations!

Routine Funk #02

Just found out that P-Vine have issued the above. Here's what Dusty Groove has to say:

Massive funk from the P-Vine catalog -- a host of killer cuts that were mostly recorded for a variety of small indie labels in the 70s -- brought together beautifully by compiler Kei Kobayashi! The tracks here represent some of the best reissue moments of the past few years from P-Vine -- the key tunes from Japanese-only CDs that usually hit the market at upwards of $20 -- all packaged together here in one all-grooving set, all the way through! CD offers up all numbers unmixed -- and the set features 16 titles that include "I Learned My Lesson" by Vernon Garrett, "LA Will Make You Pay" by Burton Inc, "Soulful Proclamation" by Messengers Incorporated, "Drums For Daryl" by Roy Porter, "Tragic Magic" by Nathan Davis, "Trippin" by Cal Green, "Head Start" by Joe Pass, "Soul Sisters" by Weldon Irvine, "Out On The Coast" by Larry Willis, and "Crown Royale" by Billy Wooten.

Pieces Of Peace Scarab/Cali Tex

There have been some tasty releases this year and here is another one from Scarab/Cali Tex.

Here's Dusty Groove's take on the CD:

A lost treasure of rare soul from the Chicago scene -- the unreleased album by Pieces Of Peace -- a combo with ties both to the late 60s soul of Twinight Records and the early 70s grooves of The Pharoahs! This set was initially recorded by The Pharoahs' Scarab label, but never issued at the time -- and it shows a tremendous growth from the earlier hard funk styles of the Pieces -- a move into fuller, more complicated modes that often had the same righteous blend of jazz, soul, and spirituality as Earth Wind & Fire! The production here is great, and the tapes haven't suffered at all for all their years on the shelf -- and if anything, the album's even more explosive now than if it was issued at the time -- given how long we've had to wait. The reissue is beautiful too -- probably better done than any original wax might have been -- thanks to careful curation from Josh (DJ Shadow) Davis, Dante Carfagna, and Rob Sevier -- the latter of whom turns in some Numero-styled notes that really tell the full story of the group. Titles include "Cease Fire", "Pollution", "Flunky For Your Love", "I Still Care", "Peace & Blessings", and "Yesterday's Visions". (Limited edition of 2500 copies!)

Ann Arbor Soul Club First Anniversary

Northern Soul Of Tangerine

The Tangerine label is a source of untapped goodies on CD! This is the first one I have come across though I am not sure of its origins. However, the track selection is spot on and contains some of my favourite uptempo/midtempo sides from the label including George Wydell, George Byrd and Jimmy Lewis.

What I would love to see is Ace/Kent or Numero Uno getting access to the vaults and putting out some definitive compilations out.

Harlem Anthology

Harry Mitchell in Harlem Courtesy of Harry

I have come across a fascinating anthology on Harlem based on the memories and photos of Harry Mitchell.

I have posted below Harry's description of the anthology to give a flavour of what it is about but better still drop over!

I am Harry Mitchell, the creator of this electronic scrapbook. For as long as I can remember, I have always been interested in the field of photography. Capturing special moments on film has allowed my family, friends and I to reminiscence about the good old days of the 1960’s and 70’s. However, never in my wildest dreams could I have ever imagined that technology, such as the Internet, would afford me the opportunity to share my memories with so many. From Jacksonville, Florida to the “Big Apple;” from the tough Marine training in Parris Island, South Carolina to the tough, infamous stage of the Apollo Theater, this website offers a little bit of yesterday for just about everyone.

In the Apollo Theater section, you will see and hear a variety of entertainers whose names are now synonymous with “greatness”. Relive the sensual sounds of Al “Let’s Stay Together” Green; the smooth song and dance of Gladys Knight and the Pips and the velvet voice of the late WBLS Disc Jockey, “Hollywood” Frankie Crocker. I was fortunate to have had the privilege to meet, hang out and party with a number of famous singers, comediennes, and movie and television stars. I used Super 8mm sound and 35mm still film to record many of the Apollo Theater performances.

As a New York City police officer, I was assigned to the 28th precinct. My partner and I patrolled Post 77, an area known to as 125th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues. The NYPD section shows the swearing-in and graduation ceremony of me and approximately 500 of my fellow officers. Although the intensive training of criminal law, weapons, judo, boxing, etc. was designed to prepare me for the unexpected, my greatest education came from the people in the hood. Therefore, I included The Neighborhood section to say “thanks” to the store and street merchants; the grandmas and children; the street cleaners and street walkers - those ordinary folk who were passed by and have passed on, but were never forgotten by this retired police officer.

I was one of the few. I was one of the proud. I was a Marine! The USMC section contains photographs and narratives of my basic training in Parris Island, South Carolina. There are also pictures with my buddies during various work details and during liberty. I entered the Marines as a young, arrogant, skinny teenager. I became a General Jet Mechanic and Plane Captain to A4B’s aircraft. I left the United States Marines as a man.

Finally, the Black Health section is filled with useful information to benefit the entire Black community. Here, you’ll find video clips from “What Every African American Needs to Know About Alzheimer’s Disease, ” an educational video funded by the Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville. I was fortunate to have served as the producer and consultant on this project. Following the diagnosis of my grandfather, I learned that information about respite care and experimental treatments for Alzheimer’s were not getting to the Black community. Testimonials of those individuals who have been in the war with this cruel disease inspired me and underscored the importance of educating people whose lives will forever be changed by Alzheimer’s. This section will be updated with other health topics such as breast cancer and diabetes.

Harlem Anthology is a collection of physical reminders of some of the greatest times of my life. It is my desire to share them with the people that were there with me, as well as to show the younger generations exactly what they missed. If any of these images or sounds touch you personally and take you back to an earlier time, please write to me and share your memories. I also encourage you to do preserve and display your own collection of mementos, as this project has been extremely rewarding to me and the people around me.

The Apples

This last weekend, I heard the latest 45 from The Apples on the Craig Charles BBC 6 Funk & Soul Show - well worth checking out via Freestyle Records or The Apples MySpace or their website.

The Apples consist of Arthur Krasnobaev-Trumpet; Yaron Ouzana-Trombone; Oleg Nayman-Tenor & Soprano Saxophones; Yuval Tabachnik-Baritone Saxophone; Shai Ran- Acoustic Bass; Yonadav Halevy- Drums; DJ Todres- Turntables; Schoolmaster-Turntables; MixMonster-Sound Console & Live Effects.

Here's the blurb on the band:

For their second 7" single for Freestyle Records, Israel's prized party collective The Apples have finally released a version of Rage Against The Machine's "Killing in the name of...", a long running gig favorite, which sold out 1500 copies in less than a month. They've already become recognized as ones to watch on the international live circuit since dropping the "Attention!" single on Freestyle last year, featured on the "Let the Groove Move You" compilation, and touring the UK in January. The Apples are a nine-strong group hailing from Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa, weaving big band jazz into raw funk rhythm patterns and scratch routines. Their live performances have audiences dancing and laughing from the get go. Into the mix they throw anything from Ray Charles samples to traditional Jewish Kleizmer melodies. Initially a spontaneous composition ensemble, the band developed their eclectic and diverse take on funk over the last four years, forgoing the traditional use of Guitar or Keyboards. Centering around the decks, flanked by a sharp horn section, served up by thick double bass lines and steadfast drum beats. In addition to the afformentioned Seven Inchers - two albums- "MITZ" (2003) and "ATTENTION!" (2005) were released independently in Israel and now distributed all over the globe.

The Funky Muchachos

I have been adding plenty of new friends this week on MySpace and met up with The Funky Muchachos. Drop over and take a listen to their music

Here's what they say about themselves:

The Funky Muchachos was formed after Damon, Jerome and Harbans recorded some tracks for the Tito Lopez Combo. On those sessions the chemistry between them was apparent from the start and it was only a matter of time before they returned to the studio under their own name with their own groovy sound…. Here then are 2 tracks from the forthcoming debut cd 'Play Soul-Jazz'. Damon Butcher –Organ/Fender Rhodes/Keyboards Damon’s huge list of credits include regular touring and recording with The Beautiful South, Everything But The Girl, Rough Diamond and the seminal jazz funk band Morrissey Mullen. Harbans Srih –Drums Undoubtedly one of the funkiest drummers in London, Harbans was called in to lay down the groove for the James Taylor Quartet hit version of The Starsky and Hutch theme. Many others have called upon his brand of musical input. Harbans now leads the Tito Lopez Combo and his own band Vybesmen. Jerome Davies –Bass Guitar Jerome has played bass for many household names –Clare Teal, Marti Pellow, and Curtis Stigers to name but a few recent ones. He is in demand by singers and musicians in all styles of music from bluegrass to big band and contemporary jazz.

Dr Feelgood Potts Going Down To Memphis

I was very pleased to hear that Robert"Feelgood" Potts has a new CD out called Going Down To Memphis.

Here is what Blues Critic had to say about the CD:

Those only familiar with Potts' two enjoyable "Southern Soul/Blues" discs for Ecko Records may be stunned by this sizzling set of harmonica blues recorded in the heart of Memphis. Potts had a sizable chitlin' circuit hit or two, most notably his cheeky answer song to Theodis Ealey called "Make It Talk" but "Going Back To Memphis" should catapult the Dr to another plateau. Word on the grapevine was that Potts, who's the father of Ecko recording artist Sheba Potts-Wright, ended his tenure with the label because he wanted to cut "real Blues". He did show off his mouthharp chops on a couple of instrumentals from his last LP (also called "Make It Talk") but that skill is front and center here.

10 originals tunes were completed at Sam Phillips' (of Sun Records fame) Recording Studio with a small unit of session musicians, including bassists James Coleman & Chiemi "the Ice Lady" Fujio, guitarists Coleman & Harrell Otis, drummers James McMullen & Calvin King and piano by "Professor" Ross Fowler. The LP's template is definitely Willie Dixon. Vintage 12-bar Chicago-styled shuffles like "My In-Laws" & "A Dab Of Your Love", slow from-the-bottom blues like "Greenwood Mississippi Town" & "Ramblin' Mind Blues"; plus erstwhile pounders like "I Love You Baby" & "Pistol Packing Mama" that could've fit on a Howlin' Wolf record. This kind of blues isn't offering anything original so the key's how well you sing, play and produce it. All three are superb on this record.

Potts sounds like he's found his true voice on the mic, easing up on the breathless vibrato he uses to end his phrases and resorting to good ol' blues shoutin'. The title track, which has the promise of many a cover, says it all. "I'm going down to Memphis where they're really plain' the Blues... People come from all over the world to hear the blues on Beale Street". Of course they also come to hear Southern Soul/Blues as well and now Potts has conquered both.

Turley Richards Back To My Roots

I always loved Turley Richard's I Feel Alright on Columbia so I was intrigued to hear he has a website with plenty of information about his career.

Roy Hamilton Warm Soul CD

I was pleased to see a CD of Roy hamilton's MGM material from a new label called Poker. Here's the review of the CD taken from Amazon:

Born in Leesburg, Georgia, USA in 1929, and having developed his singing technique in a church choir, Roy is generally well-known for the many pop/ gospel/R&B hits that he recorded for Epic in the 50s/60s. Most notably his version of `You'll Never Walk Alone', which, along with other famous songs such as `If I Loved You', `Ebb Tide', `Hurt' and `Unchained Melody', all helped to catapult Roy into the spotlight and huge fame. This period has been extensively documented and there are a plethora of fine CDs of this repertoire currently available.

The era we are concerned with here is his first album for MGM in 1963 "Warm Soul" and also the seven MGM singles that were originally released from 1963 > 1964. "Warm Soul" is re-issued here for the first time and is in part, a showcase of many fine MOR ballads, which are complemented in turn by some gorgeous gospel and soul recordings. Roy by now had honed his style perfectly to suit the recently emerging Soul sound and many consider his MGM 45 repertoire to be some of finest he ever committed to vinyl.
As a super bonus, we are proud to finally issue the previously unreleased After He Breaks Your Heart, recorded in 1964 during the legendary The Panic Is On / There She Is session, conducted by the renowned Bert Keyes.

The legendary producer Bert Berns was even at the helm of production duties on certain sessions and yet many of these recordings failed to make a big impression at the time. However, they do say that "truth will out" so it was no surprise when the Northern Soul cognoscente became hip to some of this esteemed repertoire and turned several of the MGM 45s into club and dance-floor classics; especially `The Panic Is On', `She Make Me Wanna Dance' and `You Can Count On Me'. As with the album, many of these MGM 45 sides are making their CD debut.

Roy would of course later go on to record some more classic and legendary soul sides for RCA... but that's another story! It's a sad one too, as Roy would die of a stroke not that long afterwards in 1969. But thankfully, he left a fabulous portfolio of recorded work behind; not least these outstanding MGM sides...

An essential buy especially to hear the unissued track!

Charles Mintz

I have posted several posts on Charles Mintz in the past. This week, I found out something new about his recording career. Apparently, he recorded as Tommy Starr on Better think of what you're losing/Love wheel for Loma and worked under this name together with the Blenders. He stopped using the name because Otis Redding told him so! Thanks must go to Malayka for the info.

You can find out more about Charles by visiting his MySpace and here is what he says about his career:

The youngest of three brothers hailing from Orangeburg, SC. Charles would sing together with his siblings for friends and family until a cousin-hook him up with a band call The Majestics, Charles began to sing covers at record-hops, high schools, and college shows. His English teacher got on his case about his developing talent, she said, if you use all that energy to sing someone else’s songs. Why don’t you write and sing something of your own, and that’s how it all started, Charles, wrote a song in school called “There’s No Need Crying” the young ladies would go crazy when he would perform. Charles, move to Philly in the late 60’s and early 70’s he met up with manager, and producer, Gene Lawson. Mr. Lawson is best known as Otis Redding’s Publicist, and also for recording Teddy Pendergrass, before joining Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes, in fact Teddy, sang back ground vocals on Charles, first recording session. Though these sessions remained unreleased until now. Gene Lawson, introduced, Charles, to Otis Redding who took an interest in Charles Voice, and his writing ability. Otis Redding recorded one of Charles, song call “Free Me” and wanted to bring him into the Stax record family, but faith would not let it happen Otis Redding, was kill in a plane crash Dec. 10, 1967. Then Gene Lawson decided he wanted to start his own record label call “UpLook Records” he recorded Charles Mintz, his first artist on the “UpLook Label” a song call “Since I Found You” written by Charles Mintz, “Give A Man A Break” written by Eugene Jones of the Volcanoes singing group. His 3rd single for “UpLook” call “Running Back,” which has become a cult favorite in England, where it is being played in soul night clubs all over Europe today.

Charles Mintz, has performed with many recording groups Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes, The Dells singing group, The Spinners, Sam and Dave, The Delfonics, The Intruders featuring Little Sonny, Frankie Beverly and Maze known back in the day as Raw Soul, The O’Jays and many other recording groups. Charles Mintz renewed interest has led to his early 70’s recording release of a Cd call “The Best of Charles Mintz” and also a gospel Cd written and produce by Mr. Mintz title “A Message of Songs.” He has a new single call “Stop The Killing” soon to be release taken from his up coming Cd, “Listen Up For A Moment” be on the look out for this talented artist and song writer.

You can now pick up Stop The Killing from CD Baby.

Cool Jerk Jimmy's Bag/No Use In Crying

Just come across a stomping Hammond instrumental 45 called Jimmy's Bag with a nice sing along track No Use Crying on the the other side from a band called Cooljerk. Here's the bands's blurb:
COOLJERK strode onto the scene in 2003 with a mission: using the power of cracking 60s soul and RnB, make the people shake their ass! and so it was from the Pleasure Unit to the 100 Club, scooter rallies to club dos, faithful congregations heard the word according to Howlin Wolf, Ike and Tina, Junior Walker, Jimmy Smith and other preachers from the Church of Seriously Cool. Feet tapped, heads nodded and yes!.. ass was shook. Mission accomplished, the Soul Salvation Army marched into 2005 with new weapons of mass enjoyment... their own cracking choons. Scribbled onto beer mats by cooljerk's creative department, original tracks were unleashed sharpish @ the Eel Pie Club- 60s mecca for disciples of white Brit soul. Once host to (among others) the Who, Yardbirds and Rolling Stones, the fame academy for high achievers properly jerked to a live recording of ' just wanna say '. More grade A groovers were furiously penned in the Cooljerk classroom and the Feel It! EP was ready for launch . . .

Les Cappuccino UFO

One of my favourite 70's UK TV programmes was Gerry Anderson's UFO. I always liked the theme tune and have just found a knock out version of the song by the Japanese group Les Cappuccino.

The band consist of Tommy]-Guitar,Vocal , [Marie]-Hammond , Rhodes , Pianet , Vox Organ...., Vocal , [Chiggy]- Bass,Vocal , [Ryu-ta]-Drums

Paolo "Apollo" Negri A Bigger Tomorrow

I have been meaning to mention this CD fro ages - go over to Paolo's MySpace to hear tracks and get more info on the man.

Here's the blurb on his latest enterprise:

During the production of "Applecore" EP, an idea for an allstar album began to take shape. "A Bigger Tomorrow" is a 15 track album of epic proportions. If features guest appearances on every song from Hammondbeat bands Leslie Overdrive, Nick Rossi Set, Phat Fred, and The Link Quartet, as well as from other top funk and groove bands such as The New Mastersounds, Stoned Soul Picnic, Big Boss Man, Speaklow, Diplomats of Solid Sound, Montefiori Cocktail, Gene Drayton Unit, The Five Aces, and many more. Paolo also performs live and in the studio with Phat Fred and Leslie Overdrive, and after two years off, The Link Quartet will hit the road in the autumn of 2007 previewing their new material for a 2008 album.

Mr Day New EP

Just heard this over on Mr Day's MySpace and must say it is a nice groove to the Sebastian William's classic Get Your Point Over.

Purple Weekend 6/7/8 December 2007

Gene Drayton Unit @ Brussels Rhythm & Blues Club 8/12/07

Just found ou that the guys are performing in Brussels in December. Here's the blurb from the Brussels Rhythm & Blues Club:
8th December 2007 - Gene Drayton Unit (UK), plus BRBC house band The Witness. Gene Drayton Unit is a five piece from London playing original instrumental rhythm 'n' blues with a modern Hammond-tenor sax-and-guitar twist. GDU, making a welcome return to the BRBC, has released 5 vinyl singles and two CDs (Smells Like '66 and At The Jazz Traffic Lights). The band has a residency at London's prestigious 100 Club, as well as gigging extensively across England, Ireland, France, Spain, Sweden and Italy.

Sorenson Soul Work

I continue to increase my friends on MySpace. Just come across the Sorenson Soul Work. The band consist of //Drums- Adam Sorensen/Hammond-Steve Brown/Saxophone-Brian Molley/Guitar-Allan Mckeown//.
This is the blurb on the band:
The Sorensen Soul Work-out got together to create funk, soul and jazz in the dynamic style of the classic organ combos of the 60s/70s, the band formed in Scotland in 05 when New York drummer Adam Sorensen met guitar player Allan Mckeown when gigging in Scotlands 1st city of funk, Glasgow. Next they contacted Manchester organist/pianist Steve Brown and organized a short tour for Jan 06 which also included tenor saxophonist Brian(the Guac) Molley. The SSW has completed 5 U.K. tours since, and has performed in the Glasgow Jazz Festival. Now with an album deal from Buff international records, the SSW will be releasing it's debut record in summer 2007. The bands purpose is simple........to spread love through deep, funky sounds.

Go and check the band out.

It was a blast! :-)

Carolina Funk CD Release Party@ The Whig 7/12/07

Got a message through about the above.

Check out another cracking CD from Jazzman:

Jazzman records continues its quest to uncover the best and rarest Funk ever recorded, and after the success of last year’s ‘Florida Funk’, we’ve moved up the Atlantic coast to look at the vibrant and original scene in the two rural states of North and South Carolina – collectively known as the Carolinas. Bordering the Bible belt, the Carolinas share the hidebound reputation of neighbouring Tenessee – and without any large urban centres, much of the musical output of the Carolinas has been limited to single towns, with bands and their records seldom venturing further than the state line. Funk 45 label boss Jazzman Gerald and resident North Carolina collector Jason Perlmutter have selected 22 of the rarest and most coveted examples of heavy funk from the Atlantic Coast to show the world there is more to the Carolinas than tobacco plantations and venus fly traps! From inspired percussive instrumentals to heartfelt slabs of soul; from rediscoverd tapes in the garages of retired musicians to funk 45s so raw that they were blessed by James Brown himself – this is Carolina Funk!

The rarest and most coveted funk 45s from North and South Carolina, in demand by collectors and DJs around the world. · Includes three previously unreleased tracks, sourced from original studio tapes and acetates. · All tracks fully licensed and restored from original sources. · Original stories direct from the musicians and artists · 24 page colour cd booklet with in-depth liner notes, label scans and previously unpublished photographs · Cover photo shows the Venus Fly-Trap, native to North Carolina. · Original copies of some of these 45s have sold for $1000 and more – making this by far the easiest and best way to discover the rich musical heritage of North and South Carolina

2. Gamith – Darkness
3. Innersouls – Just take your time

Sir Shambling Update

Sir Shambling aka John Ridley has sent me a message:

Just a quick note to say that I've added some new artist pages to my website at
They include West Coast singers Betty Willis and Bobby Taylor, Little Eddie Taylor, Freda Harris and the fine Gene Middleton from Florida.
The full artist list can be found here
There are the usual soundclips which I hope you enjoy.
Finally a word of thanks to those people who kindly listened in to Mick O'Donnell's Soul Discovery radio show last week. I'm especially grateful to those who took the time and trouble to email in at the time or to me personally later on. I hope you found a track or two to your taste. It was an interesting experience for me but I don't think I'll take up DJing!
Best wishes,

Charles Walker New CD Still Finding My Way

Just picked up from Charles Walker's MySpace that he has a new album in the offing:

A new solo album, entitled "Still Finding My Way", will soon be available on CD Baby. It features a combination of various r&b, soul and funk grooves, from Otis Redding to Tower of Power, featuring a tight rhythm and horn section with strong backing vocals, both male and female. There are some very strong ballads such as "How Wrong Can One Man Be", and some furious funk on one cut titled "Livin In A World of Hurt". The title cut, reminiscent of "Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay", is about Charles’ life in the business.

Charles is one of the few remaining original soul singers from back in the day when what is termed today as "old school" was brand new on the popular music scene all around the world. There has recently been a resurgence of this style of music and it is finding a younger audience as well as rekindling memories for the old schoolers. If you’re a soul and R&B fan, you”ll enjoy this solo project from Charles "Wigg" Walker.

Drop over to his MySpace to get a blast of the new album.

Brown Eyed Handsome Man

I have been an admirer of Robert Whatman's Brown Eyed Handsome Man blog since he began writing last year. His posts are always insightful and well researched. Here is the blurb he posted to describe his blog:

This blog is about music primarily: soul, r&b, blues, gospel, jazz. I'm not an expert or anything, I just enjoy it. I'm learning along the way. I veer towards southern soul, but I'll try to include a variety of music and write about its context, as well as write about a few things concerning history or issues once in a while.

I believe he has achieved his purpose and I have recently enjoyed his posts about the Liverpool group The Chants who are close to my heart. Give him your support!

"Rufus Thomas Back In Town"

Check out the YouTube clip of a cartoon of Rufus Thomas Back In Town which animates the Porretta Soul Music Festival official song sung by Charlie Wood - fun!!!!

Office Naps

Back to the blogroll and another blog which has turned me on to lots of new music is Office Naps. So I will give Danny a big shout because every Monday he stimulates my vinyl nerves. So if you have a taste for the esoteric or the underside of US music then Officenaps is the place for you!

Danny covers:

'60s Garage Bands
'60s Now Sound/Mod
'60s Psychedelic/Pop
Blues
Exotica/Space-Age
Gospel
Jazz Obscura
Latin
Miscellaneous Flotsam
New Wave
Soul
Surf/Instrumentals
Mixes

You can also download mixes and listen to the sides he features which is all the better!

Tobias Kirmayer's 'Soul Popcorn' Radioshow

Tobias Kirmayer is best known for his Tramp Record label but he hosts a radio show called Soul Popcorn with Daniel Köhler. here's what Tobis has to say about the show:

Together with Daniel Köhler I started a two-weekly radio show called 'Soul Popcorn' in march 2006. It takes place every second wednesday on Munich's independent radio station M94.5. We focus on Rare Funk, Raw Soul & Latin-Boogaloo. You can listen to it via live stream. For more info click here.

Here's Tobias's profile:

I began collecting records in the early 1990s. Influenced by my brother's excellent music tastes, I too quickly became a vinyl junky. At first only interested in Funk/Soul and Hip Hop, my musical interests developed over the years, adding Afro, Latin/Brasilian and funky Breaks and Beats to my pallet. In 2000 I became a professional DJ. In the same year I was touring Europe with 'The Poets of Rhythm', the worlds first retro-funk band which brought back the deep funk sound and had released one of their last albums on DJ Shadow's Quannum label. I continued DJ-ing and finally did a huge tour in June/July 2006 where I toured Europe and Australia to promote my second compilation 'Movements 2'. The Get Up

Here's another band who I have recently found on My Space -
Formed sometime in the depths of 2005, and now with new line up as of September 2006, The Get Up seek to create original funky Hammond led tunes. Mark Ashfield - Hammond
Mark Claydon - Drums
Clint Hough - Guitar
Ian Stevens - Bass

Big Joe Louis Go Go Train

I have mentioned this 45 before in a previous post. However, just thought I'd give it another shout as it hasn't been too far away from my turntable since it dropped through the door. Go-Go Train is a dirty lowdown groover which is just what the doctor ordered for grey Autumn days.
Get over and give it a listen on Big Joe's My Space.
You can also catch the man this Friday:

Don't forget to check out his schedule on his MySpace for other dates around Europe.

Thanks to Big Joe and Jukka of The Boogaloo Investigators!!!!!

Andre De Lang Homecoming

The other day I came across Andre De Lang's My Space and discovered that he had a new album out called Homecoming. Check it out - I really like his mellow tones and have loved his music since I picked up on his previous 2 CDs Educate Your Soul and the earlier Worth The Wait Here is what Andre says on his My Space

I was given a new acoustic guitar as a birthday present by a friend, with the words "go write that song" - it was the beginning of Homecoming.

Inspired by the sound and the gesture I would quietly slip into the kitchen round midnight every night.

Those moments were devoted to praying, thinking, meditating and singing. It turned out to be my personal journey from the PAST-PRESENT to the FUTURE.

These are my songs, my life, my story, my Homecoming.

An inspirational artist who is worth searching out if you don't know his music. You can aslo drop into his website:

The Dynamics

I fell on the Dynamics on MySpace from a comment by a friend - please check them out:

The band was created near the end of 2003, after the release of Steve McQueen, a Patchworks 7 inch. The Dynamics music is a witness to the influence of American soul on Jamaican music. Their unique sound retraces the connections between soul, reggae and dub, mixing old-school flavours and modern production techniques. The result is deep, dynamic and characterized by strong vocals and an effective stage presence.

The band are:
MR DAY - Vocals; MOUNAM - Vocals; STEVIE LEVI - Vocals; FLAB MASTER FLAB - Live fxs; PATCHWORKS - Production

Jefferson Magazine Wins Award!

Just heard from the Swedish magazine Jefferson:

Jefferson will be honored with a Keeping the Blues Alive Award in the category Print Media. We are so proud!

From www.blues.org

Whether or not you speak Swedish, every Blues fan will enjoy flipping through Jefferson, the Blues magazine named after country Bluesman Blind Lemon Jefferson. Founded in 1968 by a 16-year-old Blues fan, Jefferson magazine is celebrating its 40th year of keeping Blues alive around the world. The mandate from the start was to focus mainly on the African-American Blues artists and their music. As such, writers, photographers, and editors traveled regularly to the United States to interview and photograph its Blues subjects. In addition, American writers like Dick Shurman write, in English, about the Blues scene around Chicago and the West Coast. Even though it is published thousands of miles from the Delta, Jefferson, like so many foreign publications, keeps American Blues vibrant as a unique musical art form.

Congratulations to the guys at Jefferson who have supported my projects with willie walker & The Butanes, Laura Lee and Freddie Hughes in the past.

Nathaniel Mayer European Tour

Just got info on above date but note Nathaniel Mayer is also playing the following gigs:
Dec 2 @ La Maroquinerie - Paris, France

Dec 4 @ Mistral Palace - Valence, France

Dec 5 @ Cite des Arts - Chambery, France

Dec 6 @ BT 59 - Bordeaux, FranceDec 7 - Andoin, France

Dec 8 @ John Lennon - Limoges, France
Check out his MySpace for further updates.
I must say that I am enjoying his latest CD "Why Don’t You Give It To Me?"
Here are some quick snapshot reviews:
Canada's national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, printed a four star review of Nathaniel Mayer disc on August 24. In fact it's highlighted as the disc of the week. "Guitarists Dan Auerbach (Black Keys) and Mathew Smith (Outrageous Cherry) team wiht bassist Troy Gregory (Dirtbombs) and drummer Dave Shettler to give Mayer a wicked backdrop to shout against". "This Album, it's the big one".

Detroit Soul R&B legend Nathaniel Mayer is back with a nice brew of R&B, blues, and funk. "Why Don't You Give It to Me?" features guitarist Matthew Smith of Outrageous Cherry, Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, bassist Troy Gregory of the Dirtbombs, and drummer Dave Shettler of SSM/The Sights. The result is soul music with a psychedelic rock n' roll heart. "They're a great band, just a real different sound." - Nathaniel Mayer. "A stunning achievement from all involved." - AMG.

"Easily the best album of his career and very possibly one of the best rock/blues/soul/psychedelic albums I've ever heard." - Blogcritics.

"A slap-yourself-silly-it's-so-cool mélange of R&B, blues, funk and psychedelia." - Harp Magazine.

"Instead of borrowing tunes from Van Morrison, Brian Wilson, and Tom Waits, Mayer enlists background musicians from the Dirtbombs, Outrageous Cherry, and SSM. The result: desperate-sounding Detroit garage-soul. - Underground Online. "Not quite 'Electric Mud' - but close." - Westworld.

George Porter Jr

I recently added George Porter Jr, New Orleans bass player extraordinaire, to my friends on MySpace and after spending some time on his space dropped over to his website. Both are well worth a visit to listen to clips of his recent album It's Life and to trawl through his wonderful collection of photos from back in the day to the present.

If you are not aware of his music then this is what he has to say:

"If I could not perform tomorrow...I know that I would still feel good about where I am today" -George Porter, Jr.

Few bass players in the history of modern New Orleans music are as storied as George Porter Jr. During the course of a career spanning four decades, Porter has not only made a deep impression with his work in the Meters, but he’s notched sessions with artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson and Tori Amos. Early in his career, Porter worked with seminal New Orleans artists like Allen Toussaint, Earl King, Lee Dorsey, and Johnny Adams. Back in 1965, Porter joined on with the Meters, considered by many to be the ultimate fusion of rock, funk and R&B, and gained recognition as one of the scene’s elite bass players.

Porter’s rhythmic work in the Meters in lockstep with drummer Zigaboo Modeliste was epic. Those pockets, the long notes and fat holes, provided the cushion for Leo Nocentelli or Art Neville to play or sing over and created some of R&B history’s most memorable grooves.
Today, Porter features that epic bottom end in his latest collection of Porter Batiste Stoltz tunes. “It’s the ultimate jam band,” Porter says, “one that actually is more musical than just playing everything you know in every song. This band slaps people in the face until they see how good the stuff is!”

George describes his latest album as follows:

"It's Life" is the brand new studio album from George Porter, Jr. Boasting a backing band comprised of legendary New Orleans musicians, "It's Life" features seven never-before-heard original compositions, including the striking new song "Waterfall." These smooth sounds are featured alongside deep grooves like the Porter classic "All I Do Everyday," Curtis Mayfield's "Here But I'm Gone," and the Meters' "Out In The Country." A must have for any George fan!"It's Life" is now available for sale in stores and is also available worldwide through George's web store.

Yeah, you right. Funkify your life!

Laura Lee Gospel Brunch Photos

I mentioned last week in a post that Laura Lee was perfoming in Detroit at the St Regis Hotel.

Toad from Sixties Detroit Forum has allowed me to post photos of the event. Toad said

The Star of the show was the gorgeous Miss Laura Lee! Her performance was stellar, and she had the folks there in the palm of her hand. A great show, with some great gospel songs.
It was magical. Laura was besieged with folks who wanted to chat with her. It takes a special talent to put on a one person show, and she did it with relative ease.

My friend Sis posted that Laura sang the following songs:

People Get Ready
Oh, Happy Day
Precious Lord
God Bless Our Love
Changed

Just wish I had been there!

Thanks again to Toad for the photos and Sis for the info!

Lucerne Blues Festival 2-11 November

I have been a bit remiss to inform readers of the excellent Lucerne Blues Festival which is taking place this week especially because my old friends Willie Walker & The Butanes led by guitarist Curt Obeda are on the bill.

I have just picked up the photos of a brunch where Willie and the Butanes performed yesterday courtesy of the festival organisers.

Willie & The Butanes

Curt Obeda

Willie & John Lindberg
Willie & The Butanes appear on the main concert bill on Friday 9th November and I will report back on the concert next week.
The festival is one of Europe's premier blues events:
The presenting of the "Keeping The Blues Alive“ Award by the American Blues Foundation to the Lucerne Blues Festival confirms the outstanding quality of the program. The 13th edition of the festival is going to bring again different varieties of Blues at highest level to Lucerne. Together with the top-class cast, the tribute concert for Johnny “Clyde” Copeland will cause a sensation.
Ko Ko Taylor
It is fantastic that Koko Taylor, the charismatic, undisputable queen of the Chicago Blues will perform in Lucerne. But this will only be one of many enthralling concerts. By now, Blues fans and journalists speak of the best Lucerne Blues festival of all times. From November 2-11, Lucerne will experience a varied firework of Blues, which only consists of highlights.
Sonny Rhodes
A unique experience will be the tribute to Johnny “Clyde” Copeland. This concert in honor of the Blues legend, who died 10 years ago, arose exclusively at the request of the Lucerne Festival organizers. The most successful Swiss Bluesman Philipp Fankhauser and the American Sonny Rhodes, who has played with Copeland for a long time, will celebrate the music of their deceased friend. The renowned CrossCut Label, which is well-known for its high claims of quality, will record the concert and publish it on CD.

A change in the line-up of Big Pete Pearson’s band pricks up your ears: The substitute for the impeded guitarist Johnny Rapp is no lesser than Bob Margolin, who is well-known and high appreciated for his earlier appearances in Lucerne. He is a further enrichment of the fantastic program.

After the big success of last year’s edition, the Blues Support Stage in the Casineum will be on the program again. Newer or still unknown bands have the possibility to present themselves to a competent audience. On Friday and Saturday a band will play in the Casineum at the Grand Casino Lucerne from 11.00 p.m. till 1.00 a.m. This year the bands are The Chargers and Blues NETTwork, who will convince the audience with the quality of their music. The “Blues at school” event in co-operation with the high school Reussbuehl still belongs to the supporting program: musicians of the festival will familiarize the students with a deep understanding of the Blues culture.
Billy Branch

As every year, the Lucerne Blues Festival will start with a free concert at the Adagio in the Hotel Flora Lucerne (Friday, November 2nd, starting at 8.00 p.m. with Billy Branch and The Sons Of Blues). For the festival opening concert at the Grand Casino Lucerne on Wednesday, November 7th, starting at 11.00 p.m., no entry fee has to be paid as well.

The ticket price for one concert evening is CHF 64.00, the festivalpass for all three concert evenings (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) costs CHF 135.00. The tickets can be ordered online on
http://www.bluesfestival.ch/.

Hermon Hitson In Alabama

Hermon Hitson has sent me through some photos from some gigs he performed during October in Fairhope and Summersville, Alabama. Hermon performed with his buddy Freddie Terrell along with Charlie and the Earthdog Blues band -a great blues band from that area.

Hermon tells me that they played a blues club on Friday 20/10/07 in Fairhope and on Saturday 21/10/07 the gig was a big outdoors event at Dorsey's Farm in Summersville.
